Behind every restored forest is a team of people working on the ground. From planting native trees to monitoring wildlife, conservation is a long-term effort sustained by people who return day after day, to do the work.

In the Lower Kinabatangan floodplain, Hutan protects remaining natural forest and restores degraded areas to reconnect fragmented wildlife habitat. Our Reforestation Team raises, plants, maintains and monitors native trees, while our Wildlife Survey & Protection Team monitors how wildlife uses these areas, helping us understand how species respond as the forests recover.

We are grateful to all the funding partners whose support makes Hutan’s reforestation and wildlife monitoring work possible. We also thank Marina Bay Sands for supporting members of our Reforestation Team and for commissioning this film. Our thanks also go to Studio Birthplace for bringing the story to life!

A splash in the river caught our team’s attention during their visit to Kalimantan. It turned out to be a collared mongoose (Herpestes semitorquatus) taking a swim 🏊

Native to Borneo, also found across Sabah, collared mongooses are usually found in forested habitats and are known to be mostly terrestrial. Seeing one confidently crossing the river was an unexpected field encounter!

In September 2026, Hutan joined the team from Borneo Futures to independently assess orangutan data generated by a citizen science biodiversity programme spearheaded by Borneo Futures, and train their team in thermal drone survey techniques.

The #KeHatiku programme was initiated two years ago with nine villages in West Kalimantan and has already generated tens of thousands of data points making it possible for monitoring population trends while involving communities in conservation activities. Villagers record data about wildlife with their phone on a specifically designed mobile app to document the status of wildlife in their village.

Hutan is proud to contribute our skills and expertise to this new approach to community-based conservation.

Through the hands of @hutan.earth Indigenous Orang Sungai women, wildlife corridors are created to connect fragmented forests. Endangered species like Pygmy Elephants use these corridors to find food and mate, greatly extending their habitat. 'The Forest in Her Hands' reveals a story of restoration, care and the quiet power of those working to protect one of the planet's richest ecosystems we have left.

World Orangutan Day 🦧🌿

Since 1998, Hutan has been working to better understand and protect wild orangutans through long-term research and monitoring. We study how orangutans live and move through fragmented landscapes, using what we learn to support practical conservation efforts.

Want to know more about what we’ve been up to?

📖 Our 2025 Activity Report is now available. Take a look inside for more on our research, conservation work, and the people behind it.

Everything starts with soil health. Without good soil, there is no viable ecosystem. As part of the TRAILS project (a collaborative agroforestry initiative between Hutan, CIRAD, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and an oil palm plantation in Kinabatangan) the reforestation team conducts regular soil health and biomass assessments to evaluate the positive impact that intercropping native forest trees with oil palms has on overall soil conditions.

By restoring the foundation beneath our feet, we are working together to build healthier, more resilient forest ecosystems across the Kinabatangan landscape. by @hutan.earth

Conservation success is never achieved in isolation. It depends on strong partnerships that turn ambitious ideas into lasting impact. That’s why collaborations with partners like Dolphin Energy are so important, helping us support innovative conservation projects through our Chairman’s Awards.

One inspiring example comes from the HUTAN research team, which is exploring the use of thermal drones to detect orangutans at night while they rest in their nests. Over just a few months, the team completed 132 drone flights across 61 survey plots, directly detecting 162 orangutans.

Early results suggest this method is more accurate and reliable than traditional nest surveys, offering a potential breakthrough in monitoring populations of these Critically Endangered great apes.

Together with donors such as Dolphin Energy, we’re investing in innovation that gives conservationists the tools they need to better understand, protect, and secure the future of orangutans.

Great to see our citizen science coordinators, Syafiie Sueif and Imam Mujiono, collaborating with @hutan.earth to run such a successful training programme in Sukau, Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Reserve in Sabah, to implement our Capai app for use by a female reforestation team with no prior biodiversity monitoring experience, to enable them to collect wildlife observations whilst conducting their daily reforestation work

Across the Kinabatangan floodplain, canopy bridges help maintain connectivity in a fragmented landscape. Orangutans rely on continuous canopy pathways for movement, and rivers or canopy gaps can interrupt these routes.

Since the mid-2000s, Hutan has installed wildlife bridges at key sites in Kinabatangan and has been monitoring their use by orangutans and other arboreal wildlife over time. This work forms part of our ongoing efforts to support landscape connectivity in the lower Kinabatangan floodplain.

Swipe through to see the installation process! taken in Sukau, Kinabatangan by @hutan.earth

Last month, we had the pleasure of welcoming our friends from @ewasolions , all the way from Kenya!

We shared stories, experiences, cultures, and the challenges faced in our respective landscapes, learning from one another’s work and gaining a deeper understanding of conservation efforts across continents.

During their visit, they spent time at our project sites, met with our teams on the ground, and planted trees together.

Thank you for the visit, the conversations, and the meaningful exchange.

From all of us at Hutan, ashe oleng! 💚 taken in Sukau, Kinabatangan by @hutan.earth
