What most people don't realize is that those very differences often force international couples to learn clear communication much earlier than other couples do.

They simply can't rely on "just understanding each other."

"He should just know."
"She should know I'm upset."

But when you're dating someone who grew up in a completely different country, you quickly realize that they genuinely don't know.

Not because they're insensitive, but because they were raised in a different environment.

Psychologists call this the "illusion of transparency" - our tendency to overestimate how well other people can understand our thoughts and feelings without us expressing them.

We've experienced this ourselves in surprisingly small situations.

When we first started dating, I was surprised that Vlad liked putting all the food he wanted onto his plate right away.

In my culture, people usually share dishes from the center of the table throughout the meal.

On the other hand, Vlad wasn't used to me coming home and immediately lying on the bed without changing clothes first.
⠀
To him, I was basically bringing half the city straight into the bed 😄

It wasn't until we talked about it that we realized neither of us was right or wrong.

We were both just doing what felt normal to us growing up.
⠀
And that may be one of the biggest lessons an international relationship can teach you:

No one can read another person's mind.
⠀
A strong relationship isn't built on understanding each other perfectly from the start.
⠀
It's built on being willing to explain, listen, and learn to understand each other over and over again.
⠀
Maybe that's the most interesting paradox of international relationships:
