Hwee’s Book Share Club ⭐️ Media/Editorial Consultant #themediaconsultants @channelnewsasia @medillschool 📖: A Forgery of Fate
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
What a weekend! There is really nothing happier than a full house at a bookstore 😍

And to gather and listen to Ken Liu has made this an unforgettable experience.

We live in a world where “our existence has never been more existential”. This world is officially more human-made than natural, and are we going to continue to be more deeply troubled or to believe that each and every one of us has the capacity to make change?

These were very hard questions Ken asked us back. And what struck me most was the very core of his new book, All That We See or Seem — that in a world (just “5 seconds into the future”), dominated by AI, humans continue to desire making dreams, sharing stories together.

And that’s what we did today. In the parlance of this new book, Ken was our “oneirofex”, our dream-maker, we came together to share stories and humanity.

If you missed this, or haven’t read any Ken Liu (swipe to see our current collection I made him sign 🤩) I highly suggest you check out any of the titles by @kenliu.author for a look into this fascinating mind (and wonderful human being).

I appreciate @bloomsbury_export and @definitelybooks so much for this opportunity to host this #bookchat and @kinokuniya_singapore for making all this possible.

Isabella from @twolilcheeks had a first class view and I am so grateful for the close-up moments she captured ❤️

PS. I gave Ken a gift at the end of the session. It was the most incongruous thing 😂 Check out my #reels for the video!

Do you know why #bookchats are the most favourite thing on my calendar?

Imagine reading Spin the Dawn, Six Crimson Cranes, A Forgery of Fate, as they publish…and then having Elizabeth Lim in front of you to ask all the questions!

In town for a rare book event today, Elizabeth talked about how she takes some time to get to know her characters as she writes them, even as she does a long-range planning of this world within her books.

We now understand how she achieved this depth in a world entirely her own, drawing in global influences of different fairy tales and helping us readers to own it for ourselves.

It was a candid, warm, funny discussion and everybody came with the best questions. I didn’t really have to work very hard 🤩

Thank you, @elimpix - please come again soon! And @kinokuniya_singapore my second home 😛and above all, @definitelybooks for having me.

Here’s a “pro” photo for the year from my work with The Media Consultants SG, and time for the somewhat-annual intro!

I’m Hwee and I take great pride in reminiscing about my journalism school days, writing headlines in the dead of winter ❄️ @medillschool 🥶 If anything, it has really honed my editorial skills for my job as a media consultant.

After school, I finished out my scholarship bond, and then stayed on at @channelnewsasia , reporting on the headlines of the day as well as abroad, ending my years there as editor.

I’ve worked my whole life with words, and it’s a function of loving books and reading. Like many of you, I went through many ups and downs with preferences and genres (when I had four kids under 5, I could only read People magazine 😂).

I started Hwee’s Book Share Club in 2014, driven by a constant desire to share good #kidlit that I found, or was shared with me. Especially as I was building reading in my charges. And #singlit #kidlit remains a hallmark today, alongside the genres that I and my family read.

Many people have enabled me to be a #bookfluencer today — especially all of you who tell others about #hweezbooks , and either read yourselves or want to build up your young readers. The more love you give to this community, the more I am able to #bookshare indie, locally- and internationally-published books for all ages. So, thank you!

Here’s to a fruitful year. January is speeding right by us!

“Oh, this book is SO COOL! It’s about a kid named Dashiell Gibson (but everyone calls him Dash) who lives on the MOON. 🌕

At the start, Dash’s dad takes him to play baseball on the lunar surface which is totally against the rules. A Moonie (that’s what they call people who live on the moon) named Nina sees them and they both get in big trouble. 😬

But things get WAY worse. Right before Dash’s birthday, a guy named Lars Sjoberg gets poisoned with cyanide. 😱 Then the oxygen starts running out, people start fighting, and Dash and his sister Voilet are in serious danger!

Spoiler: They survive (phew!), and guess who was bullying them the whole time? Lily Sjoberg! But I’m NOT telling you who the killer is… you gotta read it yourself. 🤫

I give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. It’s super funny, full of mystery, and I couldn’t put it down. If you like space, secrets, and suspense, READ THIS BOOK🚀” — #hweezbookspeerreviews by @noelleartforyou (she’s 9!)

Thank you, Noelle, this is good fun and I loved all your exclamation marks especially! I love your energy. Come back to us soon for another #bookshare ❤️

In a time period on “the vibrant cusp between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance”, the real Anne of Britanny was married to two kings of France and “born with a doom already hanging over her.”

There is also suite of tapestries called The Hunt of the Unicorn in New York City, possibly commissioned by Anne of Brittany upon her marriage to Louis of Orléans. They “depict a very beautiful unicorn hunted, defiant, killed, and finally alive and caged.”

These have made a serendipitous alignment, an “irresistible subject” to Katherine Arden, who has now spun a tale of magic involving the myth of the Breton faeries, and a long lost city at sea.

Anne, in real life, only relevant as far as the heirs her body will produce, gets to rewrite her story. Arden builds this world in a surreal, slightly haunted manner, and made for very involved reading.

Appreciate @definitelybooks very much for this beautiful copy ❤️

“If years on her wobbling throne had taught her one thing, it was that the power of good governance was beyond most men’s gifts, however high their birth.

It was not beyond hers.

But she could not govern Brittany and also keep it free.”

“I am not beaten and I shall not break.”

“The impossibility of it shook her, but it was her whole life’s work to take impossibilities and act to make them real.

To decide. To rule. She put a hand again on the unicorn’s neck, beneath the heavy, silken weight of her mane.

Shall we not write our own story?” by @hweezbooks

Hello! I have some #bookmail to show you of some upcoming and new releases on my radar.

Ready?

First, from @orbitbooks_uk ❤️

📚: The Only Way Out is Up by Django Wexler is the first in a series, a “progression fantasy” about Taj, a small-time scrapper and his pet robot. When you start at the bottom, the only way out is up. Taj, steeped in debt, gets entangled in a fighting tournament for a benefactor with dubious intentions.

📚: As We Fall Through Time by Claire North is about a fissure in history, when a time traveler meets a soldier from the French Revolution, and tries to change history knowing he’s destined to die. Another, in 2018, stumbles upon her own mummified corpse in museum — setting her on a journey that has not yet come to pass.

📚: And finally, Hollywood, Ending by John Green, who researches everything he writes about, in fiction or non-fiction, and then puts so much human into it. I know this story about two young Hollywood stars will be gold, and might make me choke up a little. I hear 85,000 signed copies just like this one went out into the world, a few weeks ago.

What do you think?

“This book is about three children named Minna, Kass and Tom who go to school in a castle in the mountains of Scotland.

It’s called Stormy Loch Academy, and it sits right next to a loch, which is a Scottish lake. My favorite thing about this book is all the outdoor adventure. The kids don’t just sit in classrooms all day. They get to explore the mountains, the valleys and the lakes, and they spend lots of time outside.

Minna finds a secret valley where she runs really free, and she hardly tells anyone about it. This makes it even more special. One day the kids meet an older girl named Addie, who is hiding in the wild with only her guitar and her dog. At first they believe everything she says. Then Addie goes missing, and they find out some of her stories were not true.

The kids then travelled all the way to London to solve the mystery and help her.

Another thing I loved is how strong the friendships are. Minna, Kass and Tom stick together even when things get scary or hard. They look out for each other, and they are brave and kind to Addie even after she was not honest with them.

There are funny parts too! Like when Kelly forgets to make dinner because she’s busy reading a book about poison and writing her own murder mystery, so the chicken ends up burned and way too salty!

I think kids who like adventures, mysteries, nature and stories about friends will love this book! Five stars from me!!” — #hweezbookspeerreviews by Heather, she’s 8!

Yay! Heather, I love this account written by you, the book sounds like so much fun ❤️ Appreciate Mama @clarifyplease for sending this to me and @times.reads for the book.

“The Magic Faraway Tree is about a family who moved to the countryside. When they arrived at the countryside, things changed. The family lived on a farm, and the siblings, Fran, Beth and Joe, saw magical creatures.

We love the part when the siblings saved the tomatoes. We liked Mr Watzisname because he solved the riddle to escape Dame Snap’s land. Although he does not know his name, he uses his brain for other things.

We also like Fran. She was the first sibling who visited and saw the Magic Faraway Tree.

We think this is a very interesting book. Why? That’s because you don’t know what is going to happen next. Every page is better than the last!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️” — #hweezbookspeerreviews by our regular young reviewer Ethan (9) and his little sister, Aranda (she’s just 6!)

Thank you, Aranda and Ethan, I love how you loved this zany, magical tale. Come back soon for another review, ok? Appreciate Mama @granger.26 for sending this to me and @definitelybookskids for the book ❤️

This will not be a long review because everyone who loves a good knight and a kickass female protagonist, or both, needs to read book one, The Knight and the Moth.

For those who already have, what are you waiting for because:

1) The Stonewater kingdom’s entire existence is teetering on omens, faith and faith in one’s own humanity.

2) A King, A Queen, A Knave and the Moon. Friendship, betrayal, love, and stakes far beyond history and time.

3) A joust and a tourney.

4) Our beloved malapropistic gargoyle in a PINK ROBE. “Fear not, Bartholomew! Every day has its dog.”

“To know the world is, in some part, to mourn it, and to live after death…”

📚: by The Littlest One in the UK! (Because I finally found a SIGNED COPY via @forbiddenplanet 🥳)

(PS. Also, this book has some mature themes, notwithstanding the pink robed gargoyle and winged plushies 😂)

Hello! There is nothing like the London reading culture, where I constantly tried to read book titles discreetly off readers on the Tube 🧐🫣

So of course when I had luggage space on a recent trip, I LOADED UP on special editions and signed books!

🔮: Exit Party by Emily St John Mandel, on my watch list since her last book, speculates on a future post the collapse of the US. Ari arrives at a party, where a “panicked doppelgänger stumbles through the crowd…and the party host vanishes into thin air.” I expect to be enthralled by her writing as usual.

🥢: Fishbone Cinderella by Elizabeth Lim, my favourite Asian fantasy writer now fictionalizes a tale based on her grandmother. When Japanese soldiers invade, Ha Yut Ying escapes…by turning invisible. After the war, she is sent to Hong Kong to live with her distant father and stepmother, becoming the family’s servant. Expect to cry, everyone.

🐈‍⬛: We Chase Shadows by Richard Osman is picked by #hweezbookshusbandsreads who has read every single new book by the Thursday Murder Club author. This is book 2/2 of his new series, a globetrotting sleuthing journey by a trio of protagonists on a murder case.

🤖: Scion by James Islington (one of my favourite epic fantasy authors) turns to a cyber punk thriller which is novella-sized, set in a world where the rich live forever and an assassin trained to kill them, is now paid to protect one of them.

🌆 : Piper at the Gates of Dusk by Patrick Ness is a pick by my Littlest One. Because it’s Patrick Ness! Because it’s signed, Mummy! 😂 Ness returns to the Chaos Walking trilogy with a new arc that is “science fiction, dystopia and adventure”.

It’s a toss-up on which one to read first. How about you?

“This book is about unfairness. Sai has no money and a small family that doesn’t support her, but she works as an apprentice to Master Paiyoon, the best mapmaker in Mangkon, and that earns her a place on a big voyage.

I would read the whole book again if I could. There was no part I wanted to skip, because each part made it exciting for the next part.

Going to the Sunderlands was a risky idea because it could have killed them. If it was modern day I would have sent out the drones first.

Sai would be a good friend. Some of the other characters are not what they seem, and one of them would drive me crazy.

The ending surprised me a bit, but not really. Climaxes are usually predictable: an unlikely hero, something bad happens, then they fix it.

My biggest wish is that the author had explained the world more, like how this all happened in the first place, stories about the great war, why lineals are so important, and how the currency works.

I recommend this for kids 8 and up who like sea adventures, and maybe adults too!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️” — #hweezbookspeerreviews by Rohan, he’s 9!

You make an excellent reader and writer, Rohan. I’m so glad you enjoyed this by the amazing @csoontornvat ❤️ Appreciate Mama @deepze for sending this to me (and while I own a signed hardback of this book, I acquired this paperback for #bookshare from @sgbookdeals

[Joelle’s first ever book review for @hweezbooks 📖]
Not gonna lie, it is one of the thickest and wordiest books she has read to date, but she did it! Completed and thoroughly enjoyed it, albeit a little slow. She even gave it a 5-star rating! Swipe to the last pic for her full written review!

Also, check out @hweezbooks if your kids are bookworms like Jojo. 🫶🏻 by @hweezbooks
