It has been a great time reuniting with Djinn, playing and hanging like it was 2015 again. While we’re waiting for our flight back to NYC, Carmine just turned a year older (it’s already past midnight in NY). HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I’m playing a baladi in my mind to celebrate with you! 😝 taken in Albuquerque International Sunport by @hwei.music

It’s funny that, after playing an epic reunion show with Djinn last night, I saw an email from Maqām Studio this morning about the performance they were organising in the evening — Tarab Ensemble’s 25th anniversary celebration. Fresh off playing Middle Eastern/Turkish music — albeit not in a traditional way — I thought this would be a good musical continuation of the spirit. In fact, Djinn is playing again in Santa Fe later this week, so this concert would provide some inspiration and nutrition. Congregating with so many people for the love of the music, clapping, humming, and hollering when something sounded beautiful, was truly inspiring. It was wonderful to just share a very human experience together. Sitting among strangers and hollering at the same passages with them simply shows that we, as a species, are really not so different after all. We’re moved by similar things, find joy in certain sonorities. When listening deeper into something, we’re not just learning about music, we learn about history, geography, anthropology, and we learn about each others’ happiness and sorrow, and all the things that make us human. Every time I hear such pure expression, I feel like I’m hearing echoes from time immemorial, resonating in the endless tunnel of history… taken in Maqām Studio by @hwei.music

A musically fulfilling week: First time playing duo with my buddy Dr. Ari Streisfeld @aristreisfeld ! It’s also the world premiere of these pieces that will become part of a much larger collection, stay tuned…

First time giving masterclass at a university school of music in the States. Learned a lot, including learning about myself, through this experience.

Moynihan Train Hall with Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet @giraudo_pedro as soon as I landed from South Carolina. Biz as usual…

More tango with Pedro and his crew the following day playing at a milonga…

Rare chance to see the whole band in my post, thanks to Loic. 😛

Epic rehearsal for Djinn’s epic reunion!! We were trying hard to remember what we did with the songs 9 years ago… took us a while… 😝
