The 2024 IMMAF World Championships kicked off on November 5th, in the country of Uzbekistan 🇺🇿! Now leading into the quarter-finals, expect nothing less than the unexpected, “upsets” were a big talking point in the early results.

A personal favorite bracket, as was with the 2023 worlds, is the senior featherweight division. Elias Erber is the reigning IMMAF World champion, he is now in the quarter-finals after defeating a stubborn Chakalov. In the quarter finals he faces undefeated American Majid Corbett. Majid in his own right is on a tear and also brings a talented grappling skillset.

It does not get any higher level for an “amateur” matchup, something not to be missed!!

Patrick Habirora can’t get any more impressive. The perfect example of a maturing fighter developing alongside his skillset.

To begin, Habirora paid his dues as an amateur and built a following in Belgium, supporting him majorly through his IMMAF participation. Almost obtaining Gold on different occasions, he felt like the best hope Belgium had for a World Championship medal.

Four years after his first participation in the IMMAF tournament, 2019, he became the first Belgian World Champion. Hence, he harbored loads of attention and expectations turning professional.

He did so in January of 2024 and now, it is June, and he has fought four times, finishing three of them in the first round. His fight against Pacella was a great experience, a prospect from a great gym who’s powerful in counters and hefty in the clinch.

Habirora’s fandom and character would suit very well in a promotion like the UFC. With the UFC now looking to start traveling more to areas, specifically in Europe, he can be an asset for bringing more butts on the seats, which the UFC will reward him for.

It still feels unreal, even in my head I’m trying to convince myself it isn’t. The anticipation has me looking for any minuscule update, and worrying for how the UFC will announce it.

Hoping for more than an instagram post, this signing shouldn’t get swept under the rug because of the lack of exposure the western part of the world has to Kai.

Fingers crossed we get any form of news soon! Kai Asakura is in the UFC, insane!!

Kai Asakura announced he has signed with the UFC! This is a very huge moment for Rizin, as their long time leading star leaves to pursue the UFC championship.

Having fought the best and holding multiple titles, it'll be no surprise to see him step in and face a top 5-10 ranked opponent to start.

One of the biggest signings in recent time!

Japanese MMA strikes again, last weekend was filled with Major promotions such as Shooto, Grachan, and DEEP.

Deep had the biggest impact this weekend, no pun intended, and their Jewels 45 card overshadowed the first card of the night.

The Co-Main event was between Machi Fukuda, a notable upcoming straw weight JMMA prospect, and Si Woo Park, the top three atom weight in the world. Through a grueling 15 minutes, Park was able to edge out Fukuda, landing cleaner and ending most grappling exchanges in an advantageous position.

A favorite fighter of mine to follow over the past couple of years on the Asian MMA Scene has been Si Woo Park, now known as “Korean Queen Bee”, as she trains at Krazy Bee MMA, a known team in Japan, paying respect to “Fighting Queen Bee” Yamamoto herself.

Park has been intriguing for various reasons. To start, in combat sports, especially early on, there will be a clear A side with the matchmaking and often they come out on top. Si Woo Park, often the B side, dealt with adversity early in her career, starting 5-4 then learning and gaining momentum.

Park’s run in the Rizin Atomweight tournament is where the audience truly got to understand where Park really stood, entering the tournament not given a chance, and beating two of the most experienced fighters in the tournament. Her fight with Seika Izawa in the finals was the closest in Rizin that year.

Now that Si Woo Park is the interim strawweight champion, defeating Machi Fukuda, a very viable next option is the trilogy with Seika Izawa and unifying the Jewels Strawweight championship.

Any matchup next for Park will be a main highlight of whatever card it’s on and most likely with title implications, no matter the promotion.

One of the Major Khazakh MMA organizations returns May 24, 2024, with their second ever co-promoted event and this one is a big one. Alash Pride is co-hosting an event in Almaty Kazakhstan with the biggest promotion in China, JCK.

Being a co-promotion, a good portion of the matchups are fighters from each promotion facing one another. Alash Pride isn’t pulling back with the fighters they’re sending, Salamat Isbulaev and Ansar Kasymzhanov are A-Tier prospects in Central Asia.

Ansar got the shorter end of the stick going up against Eduardo Ramon, a much more experienced fighter with 34 fights who doesn’t lose to anyone. Having fought Paulo Costa, Elizeu Zaleski and taken Alexey Kuchenko to a decision, Ansar needs to be ready to mix things up patiently, or he could get caught, Ramon’s got a diverse arsenal of submissions.

Isbulaev is a tank of a human, stocky for the weight class, he carries the explosiveness more compactly and has heavy thuds on every strike. Isbulaev is 4-0 as a professional but has competed extensively as an amateur through Russia and in the IMMAFs, 2019 and 2021. He is facing Jiayidaer Kaha, a fighter who has had mixed results in his career thus far, he’s a Muay Thai-based fighter who has shown a tendency to struggle with breaking free from clinch exchanges. Consequently, Isbulaev has the perfect style to sweep and wear Kaha out to a finish early.

Mixed Martial Arts, although new compared to other longstanding sports, the history is still rich and growing. Over the weekend, Emi Fujino became Shooto Straw-weight champion in her 45th professional MMA bout. She is only the third WMMA fighter to reach 45 and is two fights behind, the current leader, Satoko Shinashi.

Satoko herself came out of retirement and had two fights in 2023 and showed no real indication of stepping away from the sport. Now, Satoko is a stable for Deep MMA and Emi is currently with Shooto but has fought all across Asia, so if possible, that’d be a very exciting clash of two Japanese MMA legends.

This fight for Emi Fujino would further add to the extensive list of notable names she has fought in her career. She's gone against names like Weili Zhang, Megumi Fuji, Ayaka Hamasaki, Yan Xionan, and Mei Yamaguchi. The “Kamikaze Angel” is very fitting for Emi Fujino, no matter what situation she's under, she continues forward until a definite outcome.

Asaf Chopurov is a name that few fighters would sign to fight against. Moving to 4-0 as a professional over the weekend at RCC, against Denis Lavrentyev via TKO in round 1.

Denis is not a fighter who gets matched up with any 3-0 fighter, he’s only fought at the highest level possible, beating notable names such as Victor Henry, Taylor Lapilus, and Eduardo Dantas. This being said, RCC matchmakers understood the difficulty in finding a good matchup for Chopurov, with his amateur experience, and took a shot in the dark by giving him a veteran who they’ve had around beating the best guys they’ve found.

Chopurov at this very moment could enter the UFC and finish people, the new era, very cliche but it’s true, 22 years of age with over 30 amateur fights, and beating a seasoned professional with wins over two active UFC athletes.

Chopurov aims for the UFC and without knowing contract details, should make his debut in 2025.

The Enbo Fight Club, located in Chengdu, China, is home to countless martial artists. No exaggeration on the “home” part as, En Bo, the founder of the club believed in cultivating an environment for fighters to grow and follow their passion. The team created a haven for martial artists who had no jobs, money, food, or a place to sleep an opportunity to go full 100, necessities provided.

Ze Wang is a perfect example of what the greatest Team in China can produce, sprout at age 21, he has been on a finish tear, exemplifying a berserk energy only more announced with the style he does it in.

Ze Wang’s frame helps expose many weaknesses in his opponents, whether it be defensive lapses at range or wrapping a limb to submission. On this finish tear, he avenged his only loss in the past 5 years to Wulazibieke, returning the knockout with one, and more devastating at that.

Ze Wang’s biggest test, meant to be, came to one of many Chinese veterans in the MMA scene Zhikang Zhao, who he trapped in a triangle early. When finishes at this level occur frequently, it shouldn’t go unnoticed.

Ze Wang is clear with his intentions on going to UFC and that day will come soon! Furthermore, Road To UFC, now in its third consecutive year of tourneys and showcases, would be a perfect opportunity to build his name through each round.

The IMMAF 2024 European Champion ended with amazing matchups though every division, but without a doubt, the Senior Featherweight matchups were the highlight.

The matchup I felt most intrigued to watch on fight day was semi-final between fellow country men of France, and teammates Paul Denis Navero and Ugo Antton-Vidal. Both men are highly touted amateur prospects and have fought on three different occasions before this tournament. All their previous encounters were in the year 2023, two of which went the distance in competitive affairs, and the other was an extremely quick guillotine by Antton-Vidal.

Both Navero and Vidal are featured on IbraTV, a youtube channel from France with a massive following that showcases intriguing smoker fights.

Competitive striking affair, Vidal was able to put down Denis with a left hook. Vidal noticed Navero’s tendency to drop his right hand when throwing a straight on Vidal’s entry into pocket range. Vidal feinted his way in and Navero had a split second of hesitation that costed him.

Denis Navero in the quarter finals took massive blows and took a knee a couple times but still managed to edge out the score cards moving into the semis. On the other hand, Vidal was much more clinical in his earlier fights and didn’t sustain as much damage. Of course, it’s easy to point fingers as to why a performance went a certain way, but the one who flourishes under these circumstances deserves to move on.

Having as many encounters as they had and both representing the same team on a global stage, this may be the last time we see them in the cage face to face. Respectful with one another and knowing the game, they both aim to reach the top of the mountain.

The International Mixed Martial Arts Federation continues to be the ultimate proving ground for International talent to test themselves amongst the best outside their region. To start 2024, IMMAF returned with the European Championship, still ongoing as of April 5,Junior Finals have concluded with multiple Nations breaking through and scoring multiple medals as a team. Results such as these continue to prove the growth of the sport, in even less populated Nations.

A clear standout Nation on the Junior side is Ireland. “Overperforming” would be a disrespectful term to use to describe their run because it’s all about hard work meeting opportunity and capitalizing on it and that’s what men like Fares and Scully have done. These individuals came and conquered every match without insane retaliation to the point where they were able to return every day and repeat it, mind you, in the best weight classes Europe has to offer.

Jordan Scully put on class performance after class performance, out-grappling opponents and negating any offense, making it look simple. It doesn’t help Scully’s opponents that he’s got a great frame to implement that style at 155 pounds.

Flobater Fares is the most entertaining fighter in the Junior tournament. Putting on a show seems to come natrual to Fares and whether it be the begging on from Fares to his opponent for action or breaking the third wall and staring down the camera during a round, he brings excitement/intrigue to every second. All in all, his elusive style frustrates his opponents and makes it difficult for them to come up with a solid game plan.

This is the reason why tournaments like the IMMAF are so significant, as they allow fighters to adapt and build successful game plans that work against multiple opponents over several days.

The 2024 European Championship Senior Finals take place April 6th on the IMMAF TV website, for ppv, and you don't want to miss it, the next generation is coming sooner than we think.

Tommy “Gun” McMillen, one of the most dangerous featherweight prospects in the world.

From Montana, McMillen had an unbelievably successful high school wrestling career, winning 3 State Championships. Thereafter, at the age of 18, he moved to Arizona to train full-time and pursue his dream.

One month away from McMillen’s sixth professional bout, and yet not a single one has seen a second round. The only fight that has gone past 2 minutes was at welterweight !!

Furthermore, Tommy is an Amateur Champion at 170 lbs, as well as 155. Only one belt is missing, and that is the Featherweight Championship. On April 12th, Tommy McMillen takes on Josh Wright in the Main Event of Fusion Fight League for the Featherweight strap.
