Hey does the microwave have a “popcorn” button, when every bag of microwave popcorn explicitly tells you NOT to use it? We have the definitive answer on @hyperfixedpod. Listen wherever you find podcasts, link to the episode in our bio! by @hyperfixedpod

"Nearly every microwave in North America has a button that’s dedicated exclusively to popcorn.

And the weird thing about this button is that nearly every bag of microwave popcorn comes with an explicit warning – NOT to use the button."

SUSEL: when I think about the word button, like a button is a promise, you know, from the person who made the button.

ALEX: This is the most philosophical thing I have ever heard in my life.

SUSEL: you know? That I'm gonna hit this button and it's gonna-- the button is saying, "I'll take care of this."

The paradox of the popcorn button is one of the ultimate Hyperfixed questions.

It’s one of those questions that we’ve received on multiple occasions. And it’s also one of those questions that we’ve found ourselves wondering about from time to time."

In 2023, Marlena Arjo adopted a one-eyed kitten with a penchant for destruction. She named him Otto, and over the next eight months, Otto grew into his own little chaotic personality.

“ He’s laying on houseplants, he’s tearing books out of the bookshelves, ripping the calendar off the wall…I wasn’t prepared for having a criminal in my home,” Arjo joked.

Within months, Otto got sick and stopped eating. Arjo rushed him to a vet and learned he had feline infectious peritonitis, better known as FIP, a disease that kills nearly all cats that contract it.

The vet said there was nothing the clinic could do. But there was something Arjo could do.

“I shouldn’t tell you this,” Arjo recalled the vet telling her. “But by the way, you can get drugs for this if you go to this Facebook group.”

This week on Reveal, in partnership with the @hyperfixedpod, we tell the story of the cat drug black market, why it was even necessary, and how cat lovers fought for big changes to make the black market obsolete. by @hyperfixedpod
