So this mother mountain lion and her kittens circled our scent while we were calling for elk. Entirely unknown to us. We were changing locations when directly down wind of us something started making the strangest sounds; unlike anything we had ever heard in the woods.

We circled to investigate, I thought I saw a spotted cat, or young mountain lion. It appeared the sound was further away at times and closer at others. Multiple animals chirping and sounding off. Very wary. 🫤

As we circled the sound for a sight advantage I noticed this full grown lion stalking in on my friend not ten meters from him, we were both looking further for something in the distance. Almost as though the kittens were making sounds as bait.

The video starts after I yelled for the cat to get, notified my friend of its presence and to back up slowly to me. I wasn’t unnerved until after we left the area with our tails between our legs. The adrenaline dump was great…

If you hear weird sounds in the woods, keep your head on a swivel 🤓

The motion stabilized binos have been a game changer in many aspects of my hunting. Seeing blood fall from this bulls left side was one of them. The shot sounded good and felt good upon execution but I hadn’t confirmed where I hit him until right before filming this clip.
It was pumping out of him just behind the shoulder, maybe a little low, every time his heart beat. We rested him in those trees and called another one into the same spot this guy crossed only moments after this clip. It’s in an earlier post.

Followed this blood an hr later and jumped this bull up in the timber, then stopped a little ways further on the trail for lunch, and literally heard him expire. It was the oddest sound, sounded more like a bear than anything I’ve ever heard an elk make. Again, the motion stabilized binos helped. I was able to see his fur through the timber and differentiate antler from tree. He wasn’t far when he died.
Best day ever, and to think only a few weeks earlier we found out we were pregnant. Blessings on blessings on blessings.
