the hardest part about writing something like this is the first few sentences. it can be hard to spin something so tragic into positivity, but that’s exactly what Ava would want.

i’ve known Ava since middle school. i never thought our paths would cross besides the occasional class, until she approached me during our freshman year of high school.

Ava saw through everything superficial and negative that can come with high school. status, class, popularity, drama, all of it. she saw something similar in me (and so many others) too, and we immediately connected over wanting to talk about REAL things. we could be ourselves around each other.

our friendship was so much deeper and complex than so many of our peers realized. we would spend late nights together processing and talking through our shit. i’d get out of class to find her waiting with a smile at my car. we would do impromptu photo shoots after school, we both loved it. we would usually get coffee or a snack before i dropped her off at home. and the crazy part is, Ava had SO MANY of these beautiful friendships. with all sorts of people of all backgrounds. Ava was friends with so many people, and is loved by so many people.

all that Ava and I wanted was to be done with high school and allow our creativity to flourish in the real world. and boy, did her creativity flourish.

one of my favorite things about keeping up with Ava was seeing all of her beautiful creations on instagram. Ava was constantly baking incredible cakes, pies, and pastries. and the fresh fruit was always cut into little stars or hearts. she would post delicate flowers and cute critters. she’s pure. her appreciation for the small beauties in life inspires me and so many others.
