Posted @withregram • @questlove Sly Stone, born Sylvester Stewart, left this earth today, but the changes he sparked while here will echo forever. From the moment his music reached me in the early 1970s, it became a part of my soul. Sly was a giant — not just for his groundbreaking work with the Family Stone, but for the radical inclusivity and deep human truths he poured into every note. His songs weren’t just about fighting injustice; they were about transforming the self to transform the world. He dared to be simple in the most complex ways — using childlike joy, wordless cries, and nursery rhyme cadences to express adult truths. His work looked straight at the brightest and darkest parts of life and demanded we do the same.

Yes, Sly battled addiction. Yes, he disappeared from the spotlight. But he lived long enough to outlast many of his disciples, to feel the ripples of his genius return through hip-hop samples, documentaries, and his memoir. Still, none of that replaces the raw beauty of his original work. As I reflect on his legacy, two lines haunt me: “We deserve everything we get in this life” — a line from the Sly Lives! documentary that feels like both a warning and a manifestation — and, of course, the eternal cry of “Everyday People”: “We got to live together!” Once idealistic, now I hear it as a command. Sly’s music will likely speak to us even more now than it did then. Thank you, Sly. You will forever live.

Thankyoufaliftingushigher Sly.

Love to your family, loved ones and every human whose life you came across and effected.

Aaron Beatty is an Illustrator, Comic Book Artist, Painter, Collage and Digital Artist from Philadelphia, Pa; a city that plays a major role in his life and work. Aaron has been making art from a very early age. This started with copying panels from his favorite comic books his father gave him to read. His interest in art has led him to study at The High School for Creative and Performing Arts and Pratt Institute. He went on to complete his studies in illustration at Parsons School of Design. Over the years, he has worked in the comic book industry as an inker, and locally as a freelance illustrator, art director and teacher.

Aaron’s creative influences are all over the place and like most artists are quite diverse: the 1970’s Black Arts movement and punk (Afro-Punk in particular); the music of Miles Davis, Prince, Nina Simone, and Fela Kuti; the art of Jean Michel Basquiat, Jerry Pinkney, as well as fellow artists and friends Reggie Byers, and Christopher Taylor. Aaron creates images that honor the past, speaks to the present, and is future focused. His work is about telling stories and constantly defying the notion that people of African descent are incapable of creating any works of beauty.

Alfred L. Cralle was a Black businessman and inventor, who invented the ice cream scooper, patent #576,395 on this date February 2, 1897.

Alfred L. Cralle was born in Kenbridge, Lunenburg County, Virginia just after the end of the American Civil War. He attended local schools and worked with his father in the carpentry trade as a young man, becoming interested in mechanics. Cralle went to Washington, D.C., and attended Wayland Seminary, one of several schools founded by the American Baptist Home Mission Society to help educate Blacks after the American Civil War.

He settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he first served as a drug store and hotel porter. Alfred noticed that servers at the hotel had trouble with ice cream sticking to serving spoons, and he developed an ice cream scoop.

The patented “Ice Cream Mold and Disher” was an ice cream scoop with a built-in scraper to allow for one-handed operation. Cralle’s functional design is in modern ice cream scoops. He later became a general manager for the Afro-American Financial, Accumulating, Merchandise, and Business Association.
