📍 The City of Ghosts

First of all: these buildings are not temples.
They are family mausoleums.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Vietnamese culture is ancestor worship. And here, ancestor worship can be more important than any particular religion.

That’s why you can see Buddhist and Christian symbols on the mausoleums — and sometimes both together.

Families often begin building these mausoleums while the person is still alive. And sometimes they spend more money on a family mausoleum than on their own home. The houses where people actually live can look simple by comparison.

The idea is that this life is temporary, while the afterlife is eternal.

As far as I understand, the area around Hue, the former capital of Vietnam, is where ancestor worship is expressed particularly strongly through architecture.

Mausoleums are scattered for hundreds of kilometres around the city. You can see them along roads and next to people’s homes, sometimes occupying more land than the houses of the living.

The City of Ghosts itself is about an hour from Hue.
These are not ancient structures. The cemetery began taking on its current appearance around the 1990s, and according to information I found online, it now covers around 60 hectares.
Before that, it was just an ordinary cemetery.

Changes came after 1975.
Many people from the village left Vietnam and moved abroad, especially to the US. Over time, relatives who stayed in Vietnam began receiving significant remittances from overseas. This became particularly important in the early 1990s, when sending money back to Vietnam became much easier.

And then something like a competition began in An Bang village:

One family built an elaborate mausoleum → the neighbours saw it → built an even more impressive one → the next family made theirs even bigger. And it kept going

Some of these structures are 7–10 metres high, and their construction can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
