Solo travel can a both beautiful & lonely.

We often glorify solo travel, and it should be experienced, and truthfully, I’ve done trips with company and felt ā€œdam, I could have left by nowā€ waiting for someone else, or felt guilty or I had to do something I didn’t want to do.

But on the other side, I see people travel with friends and see the fun they have, share the moments, take the pictures of each other, bring new ideas or things I wouldn’t think to do, and deep down, I’m quite envious of that.

But yeah, trying to convince literally anyone to spend a month in the Nordics just traveling around and seeing cool shit, living in vans, sleeping in airports, trudging through waist deep snow for hours, numbing cold and a relentless pace that doesn’t favour a good sleep schedule, hours upon hours of driving (some of the best roads you’ll ever experience by the way…) yeah, I’m still yet to find those people, and social media used to be such a cool tool to utilise to make those connections and find those people, but now it just feels like talking into a void.

Maybe one day I’ll figure it out, but until then, solo it is… taken in Norway by @i_am_wardog

For good reason, the Atlantic road (Atlanterhavsvegen) takes a lot of the spotlight when it comes to epic roads in Norway šŸ‡³šŸ‡“

But if you’re ever in the north, this road is well worth checking out, but truthfully, it’s quite hard to not cross through this section, for me, it’s become synonymous as a crossing point through Lofoten north to south.
*you’ll have to cross this bridge to get to Kvalvika, a very popular beach I nicknamed ā€œthe bay of dreams in summerā€ā€¦ and quickly found it to be ā€œthe bay of nightmaresā€ in winter! taken in Norway by @i_am_wardog

Near every time you see this image, it’s shot from the bridge, truthfully, I didn’t like the angle, it’s the same as literally ever. Single. Shot of these guys, and it’s frustrating.

With little courage and stupidity, you can drop below the bridge and get a better angle, but the best shot I think is from the drone, being able to get it in an angle that’s not possible from the ground.
Again truthfully, would have been better lower towards the water but didn’t want to risk the bird 🄲 taken in Norway by @i_am_wardog

Icelandic horses… wild, rugged and deeply beautiful, even in the harshest of weather, a perfect reflection of Iceland itself. taken in Iceland by @i_am_wardog

As photographers, we know that a big part of getting a great shot lies In the weather, time of day and a pinch of luck to really make a shot!

But when your traveling, you often can’t just sit in one place for hours upon hours waiting for the perfect moment, although there’s nothing wrong with doing that, I like to get out there, see & do as much as I can and unfortunately, sometimes that forces the call wether I have to call it on a location and simply get what I’m given.

The pretty cool thing about the Faroe Islands is that whilst it is absolutely PACKED with epic things to see and do, it’s small size and get connections didn’t make coming back to a location for a second or even third try at a shot I was wanting, or even seeing it in different weather conditions, although, given Faroese weather, you won’t have to wait long for that change. taken in Faroe Islands by @i_am_wardog

Selfies from across the Faroe Islands šŸ‡«šŸ‡“

Solo travel is a big part of who I am, for some they couldn’t imagine anything worse, and sure, there are moments when I wish I had company to share these incredible moments with, but i genuinely believe than there are also a lot of moments I never would have experienced with others company.

One thing that stands out though is getting pictures of your self, I rarely go anywhere to ask someone to help me out, so it’s often a full tripod set up or just balancing the camera on a rock and hoping it doesn’t fall off.

I think I pulled most of these off…

*bonus points if you can spot me in the last 3 frame pano!

Another ICONIC Lofoten location, this one in a small area that brings a lot of joy and peace to me, reminiscing a route I did through a LONG hike through the night during the summer, a route that would be FANTASTIC during winter conditions but unfortunately not solo… perhaps for another time šŸ‘€ taken in Norway by @i_am_wardog

Well, I think these guys need no introduction…

*if you do see a herd that you want to stop by and admire, please be smart about it.
They are often grazing in fields near roads that will prompt an excited stop!
Be conscious of other road users and WHERE YOU PARK YOUR CAR!
ā€œJust a quick pictureā€ is not an excuse to block narrow & often the ONLY road for your picture, they probably won’t go far, take your time and obviously respect the beautiful creatures themselves. taken in Faroe Islands by @i_am_wardog

Not sure what it is about putting a football pitch in THE MOST DRAMATIC locations possible, but it’s evidently a very Nordic thing to do… taken in Faroe Islands by @i_am_wardog

Well I f#*%d that one up šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

I’ve been quite fortunate that, certainly on this trip, I had a lot of northern lights opportunities, and if you have been in the Arctic region in this period you’ll probably understand it becomes quite clock work after a while, not to say it looses it wonder, but I’ll see it tomorrow does cross the mind if you have ā€œlife stuff to doā€

One shot I REALLY wanted, was the lights from underneath, this was a slightly harder shot to get since you do have to be actually underneath it’s path, seems obvious, but there’s a lot of misconceptions with northern light hunting.

On this occasion, my planning payed off, I was in the right spot at the right time and, or so I thought on the back of my camera screen, I got the shot I was hoping for! I felt pretty stoked with myself.

It wasn’t until I had offloaded to the Mac that I could see I hadn’t nailed it… AT ALL!
Considering I was shooting a manual focus lens, and all the other shots before and after these were on focus, it had slipped when I shot it straight up, truthfully, I’m not actually sure what happened, but I was a bit disappointed in myself.

The thought had crossed my mind to just delete them, but then I thought, na, I still got to witness this moment and this is what I have to show it, and maybe even remind people who think I’m pretty decent at what I do, i still make mistakes.
And sometimes maybe the shot is worth keeping. taken in Norway by @i_am_wardog

Is this the most famous hut in all of Norway? šŸ‡³šŸ‡“

The first time I came to Lofoten this shot was on the hit list, one of the many ā€œclassic Lofoten momentsā€ one that you will see countless cars turn up in a hurry, photographers pile out to also get their shot.

But truthfully, when you actually see it with your own eyes, it’s rather underwhelming.
It’s small.
You could quite easily drive past it and think nothing of it if it wasn’t pinned (the first time I came here I did!) especially when you see the EPIC backdrop of what’s around here!

I’ve shot this little hut every time I’ve come here, mostly cause it’s literally just there šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø taken in Norway by @i_am_wardog

Maybe sometimes there isn’t really anything to say.

Maybe sometimes I just want to show you cool stuff I’ve seen all across the world šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Enjoy. taken in Norway by @i_am_wardog
