10 years ago today, Mike Piazza was enshrined in Cooperstown. Piazza's baseball journey began with one of the most unlikely draft stories in MLB history. Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda was a lifelong friend of Mike's father, Vince Piazza, and the godfather of Mike's younger brother. At Lasorda's insistence, the Dodgers selected Piazza in the 62nd round (1,390th overall) of the 1988 MLB Draft.

5 years later, Piazza made one of the greatest rookie debuts in baseball history. In 1993, he hit .318 with 35 home runs and 112 RBIs, earning the National League Rookie of the Year Award unanimously. He went on to become a 12-time All-Star, hit .308 for his career, and hit 427 career home runs — including a Major League-record 396 while playing catcher. Widely regarded as the greatest offensive catcher in baseball history, Piazza turned a 62nd-round pick into a Hall of Fame career.

Born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, to an Italian-American family, his story remains one of baseball's greatest long-shot success stories.

On this day in 1972, the New York Yankees retired number 8 in honor of Yogi Berra — the most World Series-decorated player in the history of the game. Born Lorenzo Pietro Berra in St. Louis to Italian immigrant parents, Yogi won 10 championships as a player and remains in a class by himself. No number in baseball carries more rings. 🇮🇹🇺🇸⚾️

Happy 86th birthday to Hall of Famer Joe Torre, born July 18, 1940, in Brooklyn’s Marine Park neighborhood—the youngest of five children in an Italian-American family. Torre became a 9× All-Star, won the 1971 NL MVP, and led the Yankees to four World Series titles as manager (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000). Few careers have spanned player, manager, and executive as brilliantly as his.

Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak lasted 63 days and still stands as one of the most unbreakable records in sports. He only struck out 5 times in the 56 games. He followed it by getting a hit in another 16 straight games, giving him hits in 72 of 73 games. 85 years later, the closest anyone has come is Pete Rose’s 44-game hitting streak in 1978. 🇮🇹🇺🇸⚾️

The “44” coincidences are remarkable:
• DiMaggio tied Wee Willie Keeler at 44 consecutive games
• Keeler’s record had stood for 44 years
• DiMaggio reached it after playing 44 games in 44 days by @iabf_official

Growing the game, one player at a time.

A heartfelt thank you to Frank Furino and the team at Long Island Sports Dome for hosting an outstanding Italian American Baseball Foundation softball clinic at their Massapequa facility.

Our younger athletes had the opportunity to learn from IABF scholarship recipients and collegiate standouts Ava Zicchinelli, Lany Vomero and Josephine Polisi. Beyond teaching skills and techniques on the field, they shared invaluable insights about their recruiting journeys, the college experience, and the dedication it takes to compete at the next level.

At the IABF, our mission is to use our Italian heritage as a platform to grow the game of baseball and softball at every level, both here in the United States and throughout Italy. Days like these are a reminder that the future of the game is bright when experienced athletes invest in the next generation.

From backyard batting practice to baseball’s biggest power stage. Tonight, IABF Ambassador Jac Caglianone shared the Home Run Derby spotlight with his father, Jeff, who once again took the mound to throw to his son—just as he has for years.

“It’s something you dream about,” Jac said. “Me and my dad, the many times we hit together, we’ve always joked about it. So for it to come to fruition is pretty sick.” This wasn’t their first Derby together, either. Jeff also pitched to Jac during the 2024 Arizona Fall League Home Run Derby, making tonight another unforgettable chapter in their baseball journey.

For decades, Dom Scala has helped thousands of young ballplayers across the tri-state area develop their skills, build confidence and fall even more in love with baseball through his camps.

We’re incredibly proud that the Italian American Baseball Foundation sponsors this outstanding camp and that one of our own Board members continues to make such a lasting impact on the next generation.

The smiles, the friendships and the growth we see every summer remind us why this partnership means so much.
