🔥 Women in the fire service have always been part of the fight, but when it comes to their health and safety, the data still lags.

With women representing 9% of fire fighters in the U.S. and around 12% in Canada, the need for action is clear.

“It’s about making sure risk reduction is distributed evenly across the fire service.” - Dani Landholm, IAFF Female Health & Safety Committee member and @omahafirefighters.

Through collaborative efforts with researchers, education, and advocacy, the IAFF is working to close gaps and build a stronger, safer fire service for every fire fighter.

🛡️ PFAS-FREE PROTECTION 🔥

Quincy, MA Local 792 has officially transitioned to PFAS-free turnout gear – a hard-fought milestone in the fight against occupational cancer.

This week, 810 sets of new gear were unveiled, giving every fire fighter two sets: one for structural fires, one for other emergency responses.

After 2023 testing found higher PFAS levels than advertised in their previous gear, Local 792 pushed for safer gear from a new manufacturer – and won.

"When science proves something is killing fire fighters at an unprecedented rate, leaders have to lead and act," said IAFF 3rd District Vice President Jay Colbert. "You guys are leading the way for 3,700 Locals across the International."
