Hard to put into words what being born & raised in this great metropolis city was like… but I’m gonna try my best. As much as it is…a metropolis, a mecca if you will, it didn’t always feel that way, to us. Being raised in #LosAngeles in the 80’s & 90’s came jam packed with discrimination, injunction, and marginalized sectors. With limited resources, underfunded school systems, and broken homes. In short, it was a survival of the fittest. Lesson number one, survival skills. Lesson number two, humility. Lesson number three, earn your stripes. Surprisingly in doing all of the above, we found wells of inspiration. The structure, the grit, the dress-code, the music & hand-styles. The freedom of expression and style as resistance. The hustle & motivate mentality, the deliberate fiber in every single thing we do. Now fast forward, in the era of high speeds & ultra fast technology, accessibility, & penalty free appropriation… it feels different. Yet we play the game, we’ve learned to stay relevant & elevate ourselves in our own ambassadorships. The only difference now is the romantic notoriety ballad you see dancing in the world’s eyes. Because now, it’s “kewl” to be like us. This all stems from a deep place, if I sat & had an open conversation with you on the subject it might get emotional & nostalgic, laced with rage & love, because that’s just how we feel about this culture and being raised in this special city. Many greats have grown from it, like roses in concrete, @misterctoons & @bornxraised have sentimentally cultivated in their roots. While branding may be as easy as a throw of a dice for some, being an authentic & consistent brand is quite the tightrope. Honoured to have formed part of @bornxraised & @misterctoons latest campaign “Hell On Wheels”. A total family & friend affair with a phenomenal collection to go with it. #Latergram A little late, but had to share a quick recap of “Lookout Weekend” a solo exhibit by the homies @theperezbros hosted by @charliejamesgallery. This is my third time seeing their work at gallery/museum level and I have to say —you HAVE to see it in person! The amount of detail, technique, and nostalgia is a true passage through time. Fotos do not do it justice *like can you see the glitter in that candy paint!? 😭💖🤌🏾 If you’re not already following them, go check out their work and hit follow! Not only talented but some of the most humble good vibe dudes making our community shine.✨ On a side note: One of the things that really stood out to me from their show, was seeing the Perez family showing out in support. I think that as Artists born & bred in the neighborhood, nothing can really top being able to bring your art to community and having your family there to see the fruits of your labor. You can’t put a price tag on it, although a little birdie did tell me their pieces are for sale! So don’t be shy and inquire, they’d make a great addition to any collection.
