Over the weekend had the honor of speaking on @adbn_tv with the amazing @naana__abyna , discussing the topic “AI and Photography.”

One of the key questions we explored was: “Is AI killing photography?”

It was a great conversation about how AI is reshaping the creative industry, the opportunities and challenges it presents, and what the future holds for photographers in an increasingly AI-driven world.

In our next posts, I’ll be sharing some key points from the conversation and my thoughts on how photographers can adapt, evolve, and continue to create value in this new era.

Today, I’m a year older.

I’ve never really been a fan of celebrating birthdays, but a few years ago my mum shared a story that changed how I see this day.

She said, “During the rainy season when I was pregnant with you, your dad had gone to run an errand, so I had to make my way home alone. As I was crossing the road, I fell with you still in my womb.”

Every time I remember that story, I’m reminded of Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed you in your mother’s womb, I knew you.”

If God knew my purpose before I was born, then maybe the enemy knew there was something worth fighting against too. But what God ordains, no force can cancel.

Today, I don’t just celebrate another year, I celebrate God’s faithfulness. I have every reason to give thanks. Remember, Only the living can praise the Lord.

The other day, I had the opportunity to join other speakers in addressing over 400 students at Bright Future College on the topic, “Students Leading Sustainable Development in the Artificial Intelligence Age.”

Before I got the microphone, one of the speakers asked a simple question:

“Who would like to become a photographer?”
Not a single hand went up.

When it was my turn, I introduced myself:
“My name is Abasifreke James. I’m a photographer, Graphics designer and Ui/Ux designer.”

Then I asked the same question again, but this time I wanted to know why no one wanted to become a photographer.

One student responded:

“Sir, because photographers don’t have money.”
I smiled and said,

Me: “Well, let me reintroduce myself.”

This time, I didn’t just introduce myself, I introduced myself side my portfolio. As I began mentioning some of the projects I had worked on and the opportunities photography had created for me, the atmosphere in the room changed. The students erupted in applause and excitement.

I then told them:

In this AI generation, many of the things we once believed about success have changed. When we were younger, the dream was often to become a doctor, lawyer, or banker.

Today, the question is no longer just “What did you study?” but “What are you good at?”

We are living in a time where people are building successful careers and businesses from skills, talents, and passions that were once considered unprofitable. We now have carpenters, photographers, content creators, designers, and many other skilled professionals earning millions of naira and even dollars.

And this is also a message to parents:

Times and seasons have changed. The world your children are growing into is not the same world you grew up in. While education remains important, success is no longer limited to a few traditional professions. Sometimes the gift, skill, or passion a child shows interest in today could become the very thing that changes their life tomorrow.

Don’t just ask children what they want to study. Ask them what they are good at. The future belongs to those who can create value, solve problems, and adapt regardless of the title attached to their profession. by @iamabjames

The other day, I had the honor of speaking on the topic THE KNOWLEDGE EVERY PHOTOGRAPHER NEEDS. As I said in my own words, “The more knowledge a photographer has, the more possibilities they can create from every pixel. Knowledge expands your vision, pixels bring it to life, and possibilities are the result.”

Today is overflowing with emotions. There’s so much I could say, but I’ll let the story unfold so that when it’s finally told to the world, it will be as satisfying as a good pot of Afang soup made by my own mother.
And to those who left me behind, let it be known: I may have come into this world alone, but I’ve never walked this journey alone.
