#fuckcancer. 2020, where do I start? it’s been a hell of a year. I don’t get personal on my instagram or any social media, but this is a story of an extremely strong, persevering woman. buckle up, it may be a long post, but i’ll try and keep it short.

In July 2020 my mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

Yes, the absolutely dreaded word no person wants to hear - cancer. Did I ever think that this could happen to my perfectly healthy mom? No, not in a million years. When she told me, I had no idea what to feel. What is the feeling called when everything around you goes blurry and black. Was it shock? Sadness? Heartbreak? I experienced an emotion or feeling that I didn’t think I had.

How do you process something like this? If I was feeling this, what was my mom feeling? My father? My brother? Well, she wrote down her experience for those going through the same.
“I cried and yelled at night and in the shower and when I was by myself at home and in the car. I needed to get all of the fear, anxiety and shock out of my system to face what was coming my way. I couldn’t sleep and did a lot of breathing exercises and watched a lot of trash TV in the middle of the night. I tried to keep my life as normal as possible and made sure that I told the people I needed to tell. This was my story and I wanted them to hear it from me.”

At this point, my family made the decision to be as positive, helpful, and motivating as we could - helping each and every step of the way. This was going to be a long process. We kept living our lives as normal as possible, keeping her spirits high and being there for whatever she needed. It’s very easy to be sad, depressed, or angry. This diagnosis was not going to bring us down, it is only going to bring us closer.

Fast forward to today, 12/31/2020. My mom has defeated and completely kicked the shit out of this breast cancer. These pictures were taken after her final day of chemotherapy two weeks ago. She went through 12 grueling weeks of chemo which made her body ache, no sleep, nauseous, etc. But, she is done - there is no more. She has retained the majority of her hair and she feels healthy again.
