Once you really feel how short your time is, you start making the hard decisions you’d been avoiding.

Because what happens in the room when you’re not in it tells you the whole truth about what you’ve actually built.

A leader’s greatness was never enough to sustain an institution.

This post is for everyone trying to build something that outlives them.

One of the biggest mistakes leaders make is assuming that because people understand the vision, they will automatically commit to it.

But understanding where you’re going is not the same as seeing why the journey matters to me.

People have dreams.
Ambitions.
Fears.
And futures of their own.

And when you invite them to sacrifice for a vision, there’s a question they may never ask out loud:

“WHO DO I BECOME IF I GO WITH YOU?”

Great leaders don’t just communicate a compelling destination. They help people see a meaningful future for themselves within it.

I have observed that people are far more willing to endure the difficulty of a journey when they understand what that journey is making possible.

Don’t just show people where you’re going. Help them see who they can become along the way.

That’s when a vision stops being yours alone.

I have seen this at work. You really wouldn’t have to beg people again if you can sell them a true VISION.

Your vision statement is missing who people will become, that’s why no one is really following.

At the end of the day, you’ll want more than just a quick win. You’ll want a life you’re proud of.

Play a long-term game with long-term people. The real win of the long game is realizing you didn’t just build something cool, you actually became someone who can build stuff that lasts.

Stop counting the closed doors and the missed deals as lost time. You gained good judgment. The mistakes you’ll never make again? You’re growing even if the bank account hasn’t caught up yet.

Live inspired, everyday. That only happens when you have deep conviction about what you are building. You can’t make up a genuine vision, and you can’t go far without them.

We’ve built extraordinary systems to help churches raise money.

Now imagine what becomes possible when we also give them the infrastructure to grow and preserve some of it.

For generations, universities have benefited from both fundraising and endowments. Churches deserve access to that same kind of financial architecture.

Financial strength is not the enemy of spiritual growth. It can help sustain it.

The offering can strengthen today’s ministry.
The endowment can strengthen tomorrow’s.

We shouldn’t have to choose between funding the mission today and securing its future.

Think permanence.

Just imagine how much you must have made to be able to give away a million dollars 😳?

Making money is fine. But building enough margin that you can hand a life-changing gift to a church, a family, or a cause—and not even hesitate? That’s a completely different level of freedom.

Our goal must go beyond just accumulation. We must trust God for capacity to be a true channel of blessing to others.

They really deserve more!

Churches.
Food banks.
Shelters.
Recovery programs.

These institutions build families that society depends on.

They carry hope into communities that have almost run out of it.

We need to appreciate them more than we have done.

Next time you see your pastor, please hug him/her.

Thank the nonprofit serving your community.

And while you’re thanking them, ask yourself:
What would happen if this institution disappeared?

If that thought makes you uncomfortable, then maybe its future deserves as much attention as its present.

Sometimes provision doesn’t arrive looking like provision.

The widow of Zarephath needed a miracle. Yet the first thing placed in front of her was someone else’s need.

That story has always fascinated me. I can trace back a personal life changing experience back to it, in fact happened so many times.

Because sometimes what looks like an interruption, a request, or even an inconvenience may be connected to an answer you cannot yet see.

Sometimes we think people are the ones who need us, whereas their need is how God is trying to provide for us too.

Be careful what you dismiss simply because it doesn’t look like provision.

Decided to get out of my room. Walked around and talked to strangers.

These conversations, especially when you aren’t forcing them to massage your own ego, will change your life.

Try it: there are people everywhere who will give you free feedback.

Get off the couch.
Get out of the building.

Put what you’re building in somebody’s hands and watch what they do.

Your assumptions need contact with real people.
