She’s HERE!

The Body Liberation Project is out everywhere books are sold, and I am literally bursting at the seams with excitement.

This book is really special and I’m not just saying that because I wrote it. Scroll to see what some of my friends and early readers had to say.

If you have ever struggled with body image, you are going to feel seen, understood, and held in the pages of this book.

Order a copy for yourself, for a friend, for your family, for your partner, for your colleagues, for everyone with a body.

This book is literally my gift to the world and pre ordering it and supporting the book signals to the publishing industry, retailers, and the world that books by Black authors are important and worth investing in.

The link is my bio or you pick it up anywhere books are sold.

In a world filled with Eurocentric standards of beauty are the norm, the thing we need is the freedom to exist in our bodies free of harm.

Our bodies are just the vessels that allow us to have this human experience. In the words of @stephaniechinnart, ā€œour bodies are just the keeper of our magic.ā€

We can spend the entirety of our human experience obsessing about our bodies and trying to ā€œfixā€ ourselves or we can free ourselves and use our energy to create our specific magic in the world.

Collective liberation is what I desire for all of us and that’s why I wrote this book. by @iamchrissyking

Loving yourself is really important, and I encourage you to do it. I also encourage you to establish your identity independent of what your body looks like or how it performs because that’s going to be forever changing.
ā €
In the midst of that, I also challenge you to remember that the body positivity movement was not created to center bodies that are already widely celebrated.
ā €
It has been and continues to be co-opted by thin women posting pics of themselves talking about how much they love their bodies despite a couple of rolls or stretch marks.
ā €
Black and fat women created the body positive movement to center themselves and other marginalized bodies that didn’t measure up to mainstream, Eurocentric standards of beauty.
ā €
I encourage us all to think critically about the ways in which we may be participating in systems of oppression and underlining fatphobia that may exist in our language and messaging.
ā €
There’s always room to uncover our implicit bias and challenge ourselves on our belief systems.

While I’m beginning to see more people acknowledging the problems, what I don’t see as often is changed behavior. Choosing to still engage because it benefits you is continued participation in white supremacy.

really want people to free themselves from the shackles of diet culture, fatphobia, and white supremacy. The desire to be thin by any means necessary — via a tapeworm or a parasite — is a losing game. You will forever be chasing body perfection, which is, for the record, completely unattainable by design. Because as long as we are chasing perfection, they can sell us the ā€œsolutionsā€ to the problems they created. Your body is not a problem to be fixed. It’s the vessel allowing you have to have this human experience.

What does it feel like to be at home in your body?

Our meditative prompt for the evening continues to reverberate as we experience the return of waif-like bodies through medical intervention, the erasure of the body liberation movement, resurgence of anti-Blackness and silencing of women.

It was an honor to chat with @iamchrissyking, hold space for and breakout with community to share stories, discuss our casual complicity and find ways to push forward together.

This is an example of the exact thing I was talking about in my most recent article, Critiquing Women’s Bodies vs. Discussing the Skinny Epidemic: On the normalization of extreme thinness, protruding bones, and the war on women.

I have also always been very clear that I don’t believe in commenting on individual people’s bodies, especially when we don’t know them, but honestly ever. It’s never appropriate.

However, in reality, there is a monumental difference between critiquing women’s bodies individually and speaking openly and candidly about the normalization of extreme thinness. And without a doubt, we are smack dab in the middle of an extreme thinness epidemic.

Many of the images of extreme thinness that we are seeing — the visibly prominent rib cages and hip bones — are being flooded through social media and tv landscape, thrust upon us as not only the norm but something to strive for.

So yes, I dare to speak on the normalization of extreme thinness. No, not in an effort to criticize women’s bodies. But in an effort to free us all from the war on women’s bodies. To free us from the grasp of white supremacy and the patriarchy. In an effort to lead us all towards liberation.

Because undoubtedly, the rise is fascism is correlated to the rise in and normalization of extreme thinness.

Because eating disorders don’t discriminate—but healthcare often does.

Thank you to @iamchrissyking for saying this and reminding us that Black folks, of all ages and genders, struggle with eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image dissatisfaction.

We can’t forget that, as a result of this false belief, they’re also significantly less likely to receive treatment and support.

We’re working to build awareness at Project HEAL *and* increase access to care. Here are a few ways BIPOC folks can find affirming care through Project HEAL:

Despite all the reasons that being single has the potential to make you feel like you’re a misfit in need of pity (spoiler alert: that’s just the patriarchy), what a time to be single.

Read my thoughts on singledom in the midst of femicide, the rape academy, and alpine divorce.
