I am learning to say things without apologizing for their existence.

It sounds small when I put it like that.

Almost grammatical.

Remove two words from the beginning of a sentence. Stop attaching "I'm sorry" to thoughts that have committed no crime. Let the statement stand upright without immediately placing something beneath it to soften the landing.

But language remembers how we have survived.

Mine learned to enter rooms with its hands already raised.

"Sorry, but..."

It's knowing you didn't mean to hurt me that pains me.

I think cruelty would almost be easier to organize.

If you had wanted to hurt me, anger would know exactly where to stand. I could point toward intention and build something solid around it. There would be a reason for the wound shaped exactly like the wound itself.

But you didn't.

I know you didn't.

And somehow that makes everything more complicated.

Because there is no villain here.

Peace felt boring until I learned what chaos costs.

For a long time, I thought something had to be happening for life to feel alive.

There had to be a problem to solve, a feeling to chase, a conversation replaying itself in my head long after everyone else had stopped speaking. There had to be urgency. Something unfinished. Something uncertain enough to keep me checking it.

Stillness felt suspiciously empty beside all that.

I haven't cried about it yet.

I keep adding yet because some part of me assumes I am supposed to.

As though the tears are delayed somewhere, caught in traffic, eventually arriving breathless at my door with an apology for taking so long.

"Sorry. We heard something terrible happened."

But they haven't come.

And I'm not even sure I want them to.

That surprises me.

The last book I read was Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas—the first book in the series! 📚✨ Definitely a 5 stars! I will be consuming the rest of the series as audiobooks. I already started book 2 and OMG.

I wanted this so badly.

Why am I scared now that I have it?

I keep asking myself that as though fear has exposed some secret I failed to notice while I was wishing. As though wanting something should have prepared me perfectly for receiving it. As though desire were a rehearsal and I should already know my lines now that the curtain has opened.

But wanting was nothing like this.

Wanting happened at a distance.

Two opposite feelings can both be true.

It took me too long to understand that.

I spent years treating my emotions like witnesses in a trial, cross-examining one until the other became unreliable.

"If you miss it, how could leaving have been right?"

"If you love them, how can you be angry?"

"If you're relieved, were you ever really sad?"

"If you're happy now, was it actually that bad?"

I thought truth had to choose a side.
