I broke my leg a year ago tonight. After hearing the extent of the damage, I truly believed my year was shot. After surgery, a plate, buncha bolts, a lot of physical therapy and even more bad TV. I was able to get back to doing things I love and doing things I don’t love, but need to do.

In no particular order:
Nadezhda released 3 singles and 2 music videos. Played shows with some of my favorite bands and got the invite to play Kilby Block Party this May. Visited Japan, Portland, Toronto, New York and other cities. Went to so many shows and tabled at several art book and zine fairs. Celebrated 10 years of Neuer Geist at Copper Palate which has been one of the most memorable nights of my life.

During all this our studio rent went up and we moved Riso Geist to a new great location. It was a challenging year and I’m not sure there was anything to be learned, but was able to push through with the help from the most incredible partner, family and close group of pals. I truly appreciate anyone who helped us out in any capacity, sent care packages and positive messages.

I’m back mountain biking, snowboarding, doing dishes (positive) and mostly feeling normal again. by @iamconduit

New work for @nadezhdacult

POPPY is a song about the shared experience of not being fed by the garden that grew you, but delves more specifically into the pain of feeling shut out just as you finally break through, reaching the sun before the soil.

The Australian term “tall poppy syndrome” describes the ostracizing of those who achieve public success, being met with criticism and resentment, and getting cut down in favor of a false equality. In Japan, a similar term is “the nail that sticks up gets hammered down,” both themes we’ve explored through this song.

We wanted to invoke a nostalgic, if niche, point of reference going along with the song’s theme of family dynamics. We were inspired by vintage Corningware / Corelle dishes and made a little twist on the Blue Cornflower design — using poppies in place of the traditional floral pattern, as well as the semi-blown out plate backstamp for the type treatment.

All these elements easily adaptable to album art, merch and video overlays.
