In 𝘏𝘰𝘵 𝘛𝘶𝘣 𝘋𝘳𝘪𝘻𝘻𝘭𝘦, Bennett places the viewer in the position of the bather, looking into a man-made body of water. A single drop recoils from the surface, freezing a fleeting moment, while reflective glass distorts a distant figure. Water, one of the recurring subjects of Bennett’s practice, becomes a way to explore stillness, vulnerability, and our relationship to the natural world.

In 𝘗𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘴 𝘌𝘢𝘴𝘺 #2, Bergeron stacks translucent shapes to create a shifting sense of depth. Ink, graphite, and silver leaf come together in a work directly influenced by the patina process used in bronze sculpture, connecting his painting practice to his longstanding engagement with sculpture and material.

Based on Bersamina’s explorations of the Northern California coast, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘓𝘰𝘸 conveys the warmth and beauty he associates with his birthplace. Glazed layers of acrylic create an image that shifts between optical and emotional experience, inviting the viewer to linger in the atmosphere of the coast

Part of Brooke’s 𝘔𝘐𝘚𝘛 series, 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘥 continues her longstanding exploration of light falling on water. The painting considers the interplay of absence and presence, using shifting light and atmosphere to create a space for stillness and contemplation

𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘍𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘦 is part of Bondi’s ongoing exploration of the figure within domestic scenes. Working in oil paint, Bondi abstracts the human form while keeping it recognizable, considering taken in Bolinas Museum by @iamdrewbennett

Backpack Painting or Plein Air Backpacking or whatever you wanna call it, round 2 really sealed the deal that this is an annual tradition for me and my werk wife that I hope to expound upon in other wilderness areas with other folks in years to come (but David and Deso will always be my #1 backpack painting babies)

It was windy, it was wild, thank you Mother Nature for all your infinite glory!!!

The two smaller ones are super smallies (12x6") and the center one is a 24x12"

I think all painting has an intrinsic sentiment of mortality in it. Every painting being a time capsule of its own creation carries at least a wisp of momento mori. This painting from last summer sticks out in a lot of ways for me, it was for a dear life-long friend and it is a reflection on the passing of his father. There's more to it but I will leave it at that. This was the second time I have had the honor to memorialize the passing of a friend's father. Such a blessing to bare witness to the awe of milestones like these.

This is a very special diptych on a bunch of levels for me. Each panel alone is larger than any one continuous surface I've worked on and as a pair it is my largest work by far. Size aside, I am really pleased with the result. They were so big that the only place I could store them before they got picked up was in our living room. They're gone now and I miss them but really glad to have had the chance to make them and live with them for a bit.

Josh’s curiosity guided him to the tops of peaks, clearest of explanations, far flung cultural treasures, and most profoundly, to the bottom of our hearts.

The light of curiosity that guided Josh enabled him to effortlessly guide us all in so many ways, on so many levels. His spirit being a beacon of curiosity so bright it was its own form of creativity, empathy, and generosity.

I can’t further illuminate the personal experiences you all were so fortunate to have with him. If anything like me, with him ever-gracefully guiding us through a complicated political dynamic, food or beverage recipe, new track, small artist at a smaller venue, unheard of restaurant menu, wellness regiment, hilarious story of his past, or mountainside while either backpacking, biking, skiing, or rock climbing. As a friend in his adult life I can only imagine the profundity of his presence as a son, brother, cousin, nephew, childhood friend, colleague, husband, and father.

As much as he quietly and humbly led us all to life’s wonders in his short 45 years on this earth, in these last four months he personally guided me through the eye of awe. I thought I was trying to support him, but there he was, in perfect Josh form, guiding me across thresholds of love, care, companionship, and mortality beyond anywhere my heart had gone before. While his earthly strengths were being shed from him, his essence just shone brighter.

This is pure awe. This is pure love. This is Josh Kalven.

Thank you Josh. Thank you for all your time with us. Every text, every call, every time together was a gift. Thank you for your deep curiosity. Thank you for sharing your warm, brilliant light with us. May your bright spirit glow in each of us and guide us forward with curiosity and love.

I love the collaborative prompt of a thoughtful show theme or commission. The prompt for WINDOWS, currently on view @halseymckaygallery, came at a moment of acute tenderness for me and the opportunity for these interiors was able to hold and console my heart with greater healing capacity than the other paintings I had on deck at the time.
I’m really pleased with the dynamic of foregrounded introspection with the optimism of daylight shining in from the distance of these pieces. Also always stoked to be sharing work with @halseymckaygallery and the brilliant artists in the show and program at large. by @iamdrewbennett

DRAW CLUB is back, this Saturday, May 30th 6-9pm for our Spring 2026 edition. We have a few spots left so DM or email me if you're interested in figure drawing in the Oakland Hills this weekend.

Speaking of editions, we made draw club hats three ways: "Newsprint" corduroy, classic "charcoal" black, and of course I had to throw in that Bubblegum cord as well. The classic black cap is $25 and the Weld corduroy hats are $30, plus $5 shipping. DM for more deets.

Where ever you are, whatever you're doing, keep looking, keep drawing, and stay curious!

Cover boi alert!
I love working with interior designers, whether it's for their project or their personal collection. In this case @bannerdayinteriors rented Lake Readers for a project photoshoot first, decided she wanted to keep it for her self second, and then it popped back out here, being featured on the cover of her new book and in an AD spread and elsewhere.

I guess it can be a blurry line between personal and professional for those that get to do what they love so whatever the case, I am always honored to have my work end up in architecture and interior design that inspires me. It's also a treat to end up on the cover of a beautiful book!

Thanks Clara and all the other amazing interior designer friends and fam near far, I am perpetually grateful for you. taken in Sea Ranch, California by @iamdrewbennett
