Reading my name in a 'Deadline' article is truly surreal! Super excited to be a part of this awesome project. Can't wait to share with the world what we have been cooking up!

The launch of the Iyanu animated series this past weekend has been nothing short of surreal. I still remember sitting wide-eyed as a kid, watching Superman: The Movie and being completely swept away by John Williams' iconic score. That was the moment I fell in love with film music—and realized just how powerfully music can shape a story.

To now serve as the lead composer for this groundbreaking series is truly a dream come true.

Thank you, @royeokupe and @lionforgeent , for believing in me and entrusting me with your vision.

And a massive shoutout to my brothers at Blakwater Studios (@karizmarcel @dcembermoon @7gbumin)—your collaboration and musical support made this possible. We did it!

I can’t wait for the world to experience all that Iyanu has to offer. Her story now belongs to the world.

Your music airs on TV. Who actually collects the money for you? 💰🎬

That’s a PRO, a performing rights organization. In the US, that means groups like ASCAP and BMI. They collect performance royalties when your music is broadcast, streamed, or played in public, and they pay you as the composer.

If you’re not signed up with a PRO and your works aren’t registered, those royalties can go unclaimed.

This is one of 11 film scoring terms directors expect you to know.

This one document decides whether you get paid for your music for years. 📄🎬

It’s called a cue sheet: a list of every piece of music used in a film or TV episode, including who wrote it and how long it plays. Performing rights organizations use it to figure out who earns royalties every time that episode airs or streams.

If your music isn’t on the cue sheet, or it’s listed wrong, you can miss out on money you’ve already earned.

This is one of 11 film scoring terms directors expect you to know.

👇 Composers: have you ever checked a cue sheet for a project you scored?

When a director says “let’s move the cue,” do you know exactly what they mean? 🎬

A cue is a single piece of score written for a specific stretch of picture, with a set start and end. It’s the basic unit of every film and TV score, and it’s one of the first words you’ll hear in a spotting session.

This is one of 11 film scoring terms directors expect you to know.

The music lied to you… on purpose. 🎬🐟

That’s a red herring: music that deliberately misleads the audience. It can make an innocent character feel suspicious, build a scare that never comes, or stay calm right when something important is happening, so the twist lands harder.

The trick is to mislead without cheating. When the twist is revealed, the audience should be able to look back and feel the score played fair.

The music is only half the job. 🎬

The other half is speaking the language of directors, editors, music supervisors, and the people who pay your royalties. Miss the terms and you can lose time, credibility, and even money.

So I broke down 11 film scoring terms every composer should know, and how they actually show up in my work as lead composer on IYANU.

Nolan BANNED the orchestra for The Odyssey 🎻🚫

…and it's the reason Ludwig Göransson's score sounds like nothing else. His rule? No orchestra — because it didn't exist in ancient Greece. So he reached for the lyre and the aulos instead.

Filming this one from Greece felt right 🇬🇷

Which Göransson score is your favorite: The Odyssey, Sinners, or Oppenheimer? 🎬

Ever wonder what gives a movie scene that goosebumps moment? it's often two chords. 🎬

That spine-tingling lift in your favorite epic scenes? A lot of the time, it comes down to mediant chords.

Without the heavy theory: these are chords whose roots sit a third apart that don't normally belong together — like jumping from C major straight to E major. Your ear doesn't expect it, so it creates this feeling of awe, of lift, of the ground shifting under you.

It's the secret behind so much of that "epic" Hollywood sound. John Williams uses it constantly. Hans Zimmer lives in it. And for action, it lets you build grandeur without resolving the way the ear expects — and that unresolved expectation is just another word for tension.

This is tip number 2 from my full breakdown of how to score an action scene.

Want a scene to feel tense instantly? stop letting the rhythm sit still. 🎬

One of the fastest ways to build tension in an action scene: don't let the audience get comfortable.

Two tips for that 👇
🥁 Switching tempos — speed up and you raise the audience's pulse; drop it suddenly and you create dread
🎼 Switching time signatures — jump from a steady 4/4 into something odd like 6/8 and you knock the listener off balance

A steady groove feels safe. And in an action scene, safe is the last thing you want. That instability is the tension.

This is tips number 3 and number 4 from my full breakdown of how to score an action scene.

I scored a fight scene with real capoeira instruments 🥁

In IYANU, the hero fights using capoeira — the Afro-Brazilian martial art that's part fight, part dance. So when I scored a scene where she's being chased by a mythical leopard, I didn't reach for generic action instruments.

I used the actual instruments of capoeira — the berimbau, that single-string bow that leads every capoeira circle, and frame drums.

Hear how different it feels? It's not just action music — it's her action music. That's the power of authenticity: real instruments don't just sound cool, they carry meaning.

This is tip #7 from my full breakdown of how to score an action scene.

my trailer track "Ready" was made staring with three sounds you'd never expect… 🫠

A stomach growl. A monkey screaming. And the ticking of a grandfather clock. 🤯

None of those started as "music." But processed and placed the right way, they became "Ready" — a cinematic trailer track that's now on all streaming platforms. The grandfather clock alone is one of the oldest tension tricks there is — a literal ticking countdown.

This is tip #6 — unique sounds — from my full breakdown of how to score an action scene. The best action sounds usually aren't musical at all… they're hiding in your kitchen.
