How much of yourself do you edit before you walk into a room?

Earlier in my career, I thought succeeding meant becoming more like what I thought I “should” be.

More polished. More serious. Less expressive.

Years later, I stepped into a senior role in a male-dominated industry and made a different decision: I wasn’t going to compromise who I was to fit a perception of what authority or capability "should" look like.

And it turned out that my warmth, humour and playfulness weren’t weaknesses.

They were part of what made me effective.

Real confidence isn’t about becoming the most acceptable version of yourself.

It’s trusting that you don’t need to change yourself in order to belong.

I’ve written more about this in my latest Better Than Fine Substack: How Much of Yourself Do You Edit?

There is rarely a completely convenient time to choose yourself.

Work does not suddenly stop being busy.

Other people do not stop needing things.

The diary does not politely clear a space and announce: Now you may deal with how you feel.

That is why “later” can quietly become months or years.

You do not need to create a crisis or make a dramatic change.

But you can decide that constantly running on empty, overthinking every decision or feeling unlike yourself deserves your attention too.

Not when everybody else is sorted.

Not when you have earned it by coping for another six months.

Now, because your life belongs to you as well.

There's a particular kind of grief that comes with transition.

When who you were is no longer who you are.

When the vision you had for yourself and your life is no longer the one you are living.

When everything you are known for is no longer you.

It can come at different times.

When you get to the top of the ladder and realise you're on the wrong ladder.

When the relationship is not wrong and yet not right for you.

When your children leave the nest and no longer need you in the same way they did before.

Or when you had a vision for your self and your life and it doesn't quite work out that way. Or it does and yet it didnt bring the feelings you thought it would.

That underlying question of:

"If i'm not that then who am I?"

Grief. Loss. Shame.

The impact it has on your confidence.

I believe we all go through it at different seasons in different ways. It's not easy.

Yet what if, with the right support behind you, everything that's falling away is giving way... making space & giving rise to your best chapters yet.

The making of what will be your most aligned confidence & resilient version of you.

With even more joy & fulfilment? Isn't that the best kind of success?

When you’re under pressure, is your answer to do more...

To put even more pressure on yourself?

Work harder.
Get more organised.
Stop being dramatic.
Just get on with it.

We assume the pressure means we need to do more.

But what if it’s actually trying to tell you to step back?

Not give up.

Just create enough space to hear what you need, think straight again and stop treating everything as the problem to solve.

I’ve written more about this in my latest Substack, When More Pressure Feels Like the Answer.

The link is in my bio. Let me know if this pattern feels familiar.

You've read the books. Listened to the podcasts. Saved the posts that made you think "that's exactly what I do".

You understand why you overthink. Why you struggle to switch off. Why you keep putting everybody else first.

But understanding a pattern and being able to respond differently when it happens are not always the same thing.

Especially when everything lands at once. When you're tired. When somebody needs something from you. When your mind is replaying a conversation or questioning a decision you felt happy with ten minutes ago.

You probably don't need more information or another thing to do perfectly.

My coaching helps you understand what is happening in your mind and body, then use practical tools that fit those real moments.

So you can do more than recognise the pattern.

You can begin changing what happens next.

Your reactions. Your response. The thoughts that spin on repeat.

If you're tired of knowing all the reasons but still feeling caught in the same place, message me or book a free consultation.

Who said working on yourself had to be so serious?! 💚

For all the busy minds, overthinkers and people holding EVERYTHING together… sometimes a little more laughter is exactly what we need!

There is a particular guilt that comes with having a life you are grateful for and yet not fulfilled.

You look around and think:

I should be enjoying this.

Other people would love what I have.

Why can't I just be content?

But gratitude doesn't cancel exhaustion.

Success doesn't automatically create fulfilment.

And loving people doesn't mean being endlessly available to them.

Sometimes nothing is obviously wrong. You have simply spent so long responding to what everybody else needs that you can no longer hear yourself clearly.

You do not have to justify wanting more ease, joy or space in a life that already looks good.

Wanting to feel more like yourself is reason enough.

Confidence isn't always being the loudest person in the room.

It isn't having an answer immediately or never feeling nervous.

Sometimes confidence is pausing before you agree.

Saying, “I need some time to think about that.”

Giving your opinion even though somebody might disagree.

Making a decision without asking five other people to confirm it.

Changing your mind because something no longer feels right for you.

Confidence isn't a performance.

It is trusting yourself enough to act, speak honestly and decide - even when you cannot guarantee how everybody else will respond.

Where would a little more self-trust change things for you?

What can change look like?

Change doesn't always arrive as one enormous breakthrough.

Sometimes it is noticing that you didn't replay the conversation all evening.

That you said what you needed without writing and rewriting it ten times first.

That everything landed at once and you paused instead of snapping or shutting down.

That you made a decision and didn't immediately ask everybody else whether it was right.

That you were present at home rather than physically there with your mind still at work.

One client described the change as:

“I feel like I could navigate anything, even the worst stuff. Some of the most challenging stuff is probably going on at the minute, but I feel like very rational about it. I feel like I can manage my thoughts about it. I can deal with whatever comes along. And I wouldn't have said that in my 20s or 30s. I would have been quite anxious about uncertainty or what might come along”

These changes can look small from the outside. But when you have spent years feeling permanently switched on, they can change the experience of your whole life.

This is the work we do in my three-month 1:1 coaching programme: practical change in the moments that matter.

If you would like to explore what that could look like for you, you can message me or book a free consultation.
