It was totally worth going back to see this! #mountrushmore #lightingceremony #southdakota by @iamjwashington
Day 2: @mountrushmorenps & the Black Hills 🏔️🇺🇸 (part 1) I’ll be honest… I walked in expecting a 10-minute photo stop. I left 3 hours later & came back later that night for the lighting ceremony 😅 I learn something new every day…. Mount Rushmore didn’t start as a tribute to America. It basically started as a tourism pitch. After spending time in @badlandsnps and learning why the Lakota (a rabbit hole I may go into at a later time) and early French trappers both called it “bad lands”… yeah, the name checks out 😅 In 1924, a South Dakota historian named Doane Robinson wanted more visitors coming through the Black Hills, so he asked sculptor Gutzon Borglum a simple question: “Think you could carve something enormous into a mountain?” Robinson’s original idea was actually Western heroes & Native American figures. But Borglum had a bigger vision… a monument telling the full story of America. That’s how we ended up with Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt. Getting it done was another story. * Funding nearly killed the project * 400 workers spent 14 years on that mountain * Roughly 90% of the carving was done with dynamite * Some climbed 700 stairs just to get to work (the clock didn’t start until AFTER they climbed up) The National Park Service recorded interviews with the workers. One guy summed up his job like this: “I run a jackhammer.” Another said, “I earn $8 a day.” Simple as that. Great Depression, hanging off a mountain, doing it anyway 🇺🇸 Jefferson was originally being carved on the other side of Washington, but the rock wasn’t cooperating, so they literally had to blast away what they’d started and move him. Roosevelt had his own problem: workers had to drill roughly 120 feet into the mountain before they hit granite solid enough to carve. I came for a photo. I left with a whole new perspective. Sorry, Trump & Obama fans 😂 The mountain’s full. And after what happened to Jefferson, even they’d probably agree this project doesn’t need a change order. 🇺🇸🤣 #MountRushmore #BlackHills #SouthDakota #AmericanHistory by @iamjwashington
Day 1 @badlandsnps (Part 2) Badlands evenings hit different (high was 107 during the day) Hiked the Door, Window & Notch Trail area, caught some incredible sunsets from the overlooks, stargazed under some of the darkest skies, and even got to experience a historic presentation at the park. Absolutely worth the stay at @cedarpasslodge campground. #badlands #badlandsnationalpark #stars #travelgram by @iamjwashington

“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—” Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭ by @iamjwashington
“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” - Isaiah‬ ‭43‬:‭18‬-‭19‬ ‭ by @iamjwashington

Rode bikes till 9:30pm on a Monday night. Finally got him tired. I’m wired now, researching adhd, reflecting on how incredibly blessed and loved we are. God loves us. Paid every debt we ever owed, and gave His life so we could be free. Watching his monitor. Imagining God watching over me. A Fathers Joy. A son’s peace. by @iamjwashington
