Went solo to the Jill Scott concert and was surrounded by groups of sistas, upon sistas, upon sistas! 🖤✨️🙌🏽 Everyone was vibin' until this song came on, and I sang it with my whole chest — cue stares and side comments. 👀🗣🙄 I still danced all night till I broke my shoes, but that kind of treatment always stings. God created me as I am, and being confident in that isn't always easy or welcomed. It's unfortunate, really. I guess some felt like I shouldn't be singing the song. Maybe I'm the "just like them" in those lyrics in their eyes. But truth be told, men are not checking for someone who looks like me. So the gag is that they'd have a mate or a date before I would, any day of the week, especially down here (in the South).I just don't get it. Happy Monday, everyone! 🌞Just a week or so ago I was feeling a bit down about the reception I received while celebrating and singing along to Jill Scott's song, "Pressha" at a concert that I treated myself to as an early bday gift to myself. 🥹🎶❤️It actually bothered me more than I realized and brought up old feelings that I thought I'd long since outgrown. So I prayed over it and released it. The next day, an opportunity to apply for a chance to "Walk The Runway" for New York Fashion Week presented itself on my feed, and I said to myself, "WHY NOT"⁉️⁉️ Well, here I am. Stepping out on faith with @nextrunwaystar and their partner @risenow.us close to 60 years old‼️I'm a survivor and feel blessed to be coupled with RISE FASHION and its founder/CEO @amandangocnguyen who is the 1st Viet woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize, Time Woman of The Year, 1st Viet woman in space (she's an astronaut), and Civil Rights activist. @missjillscott ‼️‼️‼️Ain't nobody tell you to funk Atlanta up so bad that I left @thefoxtheater and limped 6 blocks to my car, in borrowed socks and in the dark because I was literally in shambles, you hear me!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥I may not have done a Patti and thrown my shoes, but I, along with ER BODY ELSE, did not sit down for one minute the entire night! This was the absolute BEST concert I have been to in my life (my 1st concert was Parliament and Funkadelic when I was 10 y/o)!!! 🎶🎙🥁🎸👾It was a therapy session that started with soothing vibes from badass band @thisismoonchild 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 It was love (the kind that our mommas and grandmommas bestowed upon us). It was CHURCH mixed w/Anthony Hamilton/H-Town/Silk via the FREEMAN 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 It was forgiveness (yourself and others). It was joy that we didn't have to wait until the morning to come! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽Girl, we ❤️ you bad and tonight we overstood how much you ❤️ us, as well! Happy Heavenly Father's Day to my grandfather, Bennie Lee Stewart, Sr. 🎉👑💐❤️Although we never got the opportunity to meet one another, my beloved cousin @veronica391273 has often shared how much you meant to her and the family and how your gentle spirit and calming nature was one of the things that stood out the most. She called you her "favorite Uncle Ben" and told of the short stories you'd write when she was a child, which gave me a clue into where my own gift comes from.In you, I see Uncle Larry most - gentle and sweet. Happy Heavenly Father's Day to my dad, "The Maestro." The DJ, Photographer, Artist, Videographer, Father and Man who gave me life. 👑🙏🏽❤️🕊 Forever missing your "pop-ups" intown when I was a kid, our special outings, just the 2 of us, all of the beauty of photography, the arts, and most especially sharing music! Our half-day long heart-to-heart talks, boogying on down to every kind of music made by man and the best belly laughs in the world, all still make me smile in remembrance. Sometimes I sit and reflect over where I get my sharp wit, creative nature, and IDGAF attitude and think - yup, I'm truly your kid, because that was totally YOU, lol! 😆😁😄🤣I wish you were here today and every day until I'm older and much more gray. I'm desperate to share what life is like for me now and to sit in your smoke filled room, receiving feedback and perspective on the lessons from a man who truly loved me.
