When I first ran for Council in 2018, Fernie’s voter turnout was 64.2%. My goal this election is for us to beat that, and of course, to be elected to Mayor!

Tomorrow, 8am-8pm is the final day of advanced voting at the Fernie Seniors Center.

Get out and vote!

Bring a friend, a colleague, a parent or adult child. Maybe all of the above? It only takes a few minutes.

General voting day will be October 17th from 8am-8pm at the Fernie Seniors Center.

Your vote for Kyle Hamilton for Mayor means that we maintain and replace our infrastructure responsibly, build a continuum of housing for people who live and work here, and that the future has a diversity of well-paying jobs.

This #Thanksgiving, I have a lot to be thankful for.

I am thankful for the health and well-being of my family.
I am thankful to be able to live, work, and play in a community as amazing as #Fernie.
I am thankful for the opportunity to have sat on City Council for the last two terms.
I am thankful for all of the support and positive energy in our community around my Mayoral candidacy.

But most of all, I am thankful for YOU; the amazing humans in my life, and all of the love and support you have shown me over years, helping me become the person I am today.

TWO WEEKS UNTIL THE ELECTION!!!

I don't know if you can tell, but I am getting excited. And, across the many conversations I've been having around town, and when knocking on doors, many of you are too!

I have 10 lawn signs left. First ten people to comment, or DM me their address will get one hand delivered.

Bike packers are built different. After racing over 1000kms across BC, @svein.tuft had won the @bcepic1000, and there was no fanfare, no fuss. Just a desire to get to his hotel and have a shower and bite to eat.

Congrats Svein on winning this year's BC Epic!

And thanks @photojbartlett for messaging me. Mayoral candidates with cameras are useful!

I am running to be the next Mayor of Fernie.

This Sunday (June 28th), I'd like to invite you down to the Fernie Senior's Center from 3-6pm where I will be hosting a Campaign Kick Off event to share my platform and answer your questions.

Join us, and together we will build a community where the people who work here can live here, and where our children can choose to raise their families.

Last night, Fernie City Council voted unanimously to award the contract for construction of a new, dedicated Fire Hall for our community. This was the final piece of a long puzzle. Since 1979, Fernie Fire Rescue Services has operated without a purpose-built home. That changes now. Our firefighters, their equipment, and the emergency operations they run on our behalf will finally have the facility our community needs.

I know some in the community remain upset with the chosen location. That's valid, and I don't dismiss it. This decision went through a legal challenge, and the ruling from the Supreme Court Justice is worth reflecting on. The Court found that the City took reasonable steps to assess the site, engaged in a comprehensive consultation process, and made a fair and reasonable decision, even acknowledging that not every community member agrees. The Court was clear: Council is tasked with making difficult decisions, and as long as the process is fair, it is not the Court's role to override it. I believe in that process, and I stand behind it.

Leadership in the political space isn't easy. Not every decision lands unanimously. Many issues carry valid, opposing perspectives that deserve to be heard and held. But at some point, a vote is taken, a direction is set, and the job becomes moving the whole community forward, not just the people who agreed with you.

With this chapter closed, I'm looking forward to the construction phase, and tackling the other major infrastructure priorities in the City's pipeline.

I can't help but pause at the top of the trails and reflect on how grateful I am to live, work, and play in a community like Fernie. I see the natural beauty, but also the potential and opportunities for our community.

Since I moved here twenty years ago, the community has changed. There is no doubt about that! Some things quite visibly, some things more subtly. Remember downtown on any given Sunday in May? You’d be hard-pressed to find an open shop, let alone a place to grab a drink or food. Now the patios are full, businesses are busy, and the sidewalks filled with locals and visitors alike.

When you look down at town from up here, you can see the growth of new neighbourhoods like Montane and the Cedars, and infill developments like the old firehall site, the North End Courts, and the many new homes in the Annex.

Less noticeable are things like the new sand shelter in the Public Works yard, or the new pump stations in West Fernie. The things that keep the City’s infrastructure operating efficiently, and our daily lives running uninterrupted.

Over my time on Council, the most important lesson I've learned is that as elected officials, we aren't just the people at the table setting tax rates. We are stewards of our community, tasked with making decisions that have immediate impacts and long term consequences.

Past choices mean we have a lot of hard decisions ahead. And I won't pretend for one instant that they are going to get easier anytime soon. We face a number of expensive infrastructure upgrades to keep this community a desirable place to live.

My guiding star is to ensure that the decisions today allow the kids being born and raised in Fernie right now, like my daughter, to have the opportunity to live, work, and play here as adults. We need to put in the work now to ensure that we have a diversity of housing stock, an economy that has expanded beyond tourism and mining, and a community where people from a range of backgrounds feel safe and at home.

I may not have every answer today, but as Mayor I promise decisive, collaborative leadership. Working together with council, we will tackle these challenges.

What a time to be alive.

While there is a lot of crazy happening around the world, let's not forget the immensity and importance of our shared humanity, and environment.

It's been a season to remember, but not really for the right reasons.

This afternooon, I am proud to be announcing to my family, friends, and our community that I intend to run for Mayor in October of this year.

I, along with many members of our community, was disappointed to learn that Mayor Nic Milligan has chosen not to run for office again. I respect his decision and have thanked him personally for his time in service to our community; for decades as a private citizen and the past four years as our Mayor.

Over the last 2 terms as one of your councillors, I have gained not only the breadth but also the depth of knowledge needed to work with our next council and guide our community towards continued improvement and success.

We have faced challenges over the past 8 years: Covid, the closure of the Fernie Community Centre, housing availability and affordability, a shortage of daycare spaces, and the ever-present cost-of-living increases every corner of our Province is experiencing. But we have risen to the challenge as a community every time. New daycare spaces continue to be added, affordable housing projects are advancing, a new fire hall is on the horizon, and we are working with the province to continue upgrading our wastewater treatment facilities. It’s these successes that I’m eager to continue building upon.

Fernie needs a mayor who understands our current struggles with failing infrastructure and has the experience to fight for updated funding models from higher governments, to help reduce the burden of increasing property taxes.

I hope you will support me, as we leverage our shared community knowledge and experiences, and together guide Fernie to a place where anyone is able to live, work and play. I look forward to having many conversations over the coming months with you all. As I’ve shared many times before, I am always open to meet for a coffee or beer to discuss your thoughts, concerns, and answer any questions. Reach out, let's chat.
