Letter to Arike

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” This box is about more than basketball. Understandably people see the game-winners and elite scoring but your impact for us stretches far beyond the court.

We see your authenticity as a role model and passionate advocacy for women in sports as a constant source of inspiration for all the small girls watching you. Because of you they see what it means to lead with confidence and standing up for what they believe in while remaining dedicated to the community. You teach them that their voice matters and that they can achieve anything with dedication, resilience, and hard work. For this I’m forever immeasurably grateful, thank you.

Medical Apartheid /əˈpärˌtāt/
The systematic, historical, and ongoing racial discrimination within the healthcare system, where African-Americans and other marginalized communities receive inferior care or subjected to unethical extermination and ongoing exploitation.

Facts: African Americans are 4 times higher risk of kidney failure.

-Despite higher failure rates, Black patients are less likely to be placed on a kidney transplant waiting list or receive a preemptive transplant, often waiting longer for a new kidney.

-Controlling blood pressure and blood sugar is essential to delaying or preventing kidney failure.

-Medical guidelines now recommend removing race-based adjustments (which previously suggested higher kidney function for Black patients) to ensure earlier diagnosis and intervention.
