My strongest skill as a teacher has always and will always be building relationships with my students. To seek to not always be understood but to understand them first. In our bus room or during recess, sometimes even at lunch, I hold three different conversations at a time (lol), I allow them to braid or comb my hair and sometimes fix theirs. I do tik tok dances and even hold debates because I don’t mind a student having a voice. I just want to show them how to use it. Since I’ve watched that video, it stuck to me that kids really don’t learn from people they don’t like and that they do need a champion who takes time with them. It motivates them to want to do better. All my kids aren’t where they probably should be but they definitely aren’t where they started and I take pride in that skill alone; motivated someone to push to their full potential just by building a connection with them.

They teach me a lot about myself and in return make me want to be a better person. People complain about teaching a lot but it’s these moments that are often overlooked that do outweigh some of the other things that go on. That a child needs you. That you can be that one person that makes it all worth it when they can’t find any other reason. 💜 As we say in the military, hunt the good stuff. It makes a difference.
