Pole, Pole. It means “Slowly, Slowly” in Swahili.

My intentions as I approached my 40s (and self proclaimed ‘theme’ of this trip to Africa) was to slow down. How is it that the most high made sure I went to a place who’s whole motto is to move slowly?! For the past few years, life has been a wild ride. Too many times I found myself in survival mode, rushing, scrambling, without giving myself time or consideration to process where I was on my journey. I almost allowed grief to swallow me whole!! I lost people that are no longer living, and people who no longer aligned with who I was becoming. It has felt extremely lonely at times, with less people around me to relate to how my life felt so dark. Solitude became my refuge and My light began to dim right in front of my eyes!!! I realized though, that I was never alone. I looked inward, and gave myself the gift of introspection.

In my introspection, I realized that I was robbing myself of the present moment. The only real time we have is now. Yesterday is gone, and tomorrow has not happened yet. Why regret? Why worry? I am thankful to Tanzania and Zanzibar for meeting me where I was, and holding up a mirror for me to see myself. For embracing me and reminding me of who I desire to be. I can only become her if I allow myself to slow down and savor life so I don’t miss all of the nuances that make this thing worthwhile. For everyone I encountered there, to every sunrise/sunset, to every meal that was made and shared with love, to the animals that moved me to tears by simply existing, I give you all of the utmost gratitude. I will never forget my first time to the Motherland (with my mother 😍) Thank you for holding my hand and walking with me to this next phase of life, I look forward to experiencing more of Africa!!

Happy 14th birthday to my oldest son Big Stevie (not the little one 😎)!!! Through all of life’s twists and turns, having you at the center of our family is what keeps us all grounded. Watching you stay true to you for the last 14 years has been an honor. I admire your tenacity more than you know, son. Thank you for the endless smiles and laughter, and the responsibility you carry with grace. Thank you for being the brightest light that has kept our family illuminated, there is never a dull moment when you are near!!! We love and cherish you so much, kid.
