It's taken me all day...taken every day since @maritrigarrett left us (selfishly....left me), to articulate the depth and width of this hole in my center. When Maritri and I were "Freshmen" in Howard University's College of Fine Arts, I told her, "When I grow up I'm going to produce shows just so you can score your music to it." Maritri literally didn't miss a beat and answered, "...Bet, call me and I'll be there." A little over a decade later, thanks to @joydemichelle , I made the call and we "did that artist thang" together, in NYC; for almost 20 yrs.

I thought I was good with her 1st B-Day since she passed, until @aprilrsilver called to check on me. That's when I lost it, for more than a lil bit. I feel our collective Hole In The Heart, especially today on what would have been her 62nd birthday.

@maritrimusic was a BADASS musician, singer, sister, pianist, daughter, auntie, “ukele-ist” (yes! I just made that shit up!), friend...KIN!!! Kin to all we fearless, and fear-filled, artists who do da damn thang our way. On our own paths!!!! No matter how precarious this ArtistLife Life can be.

Maritri personified that life, that creed, that unwavering faith that what she did for a life, not a living, was her divine calling. She was good with her God. She IS So Good with her God right now. So we must be good with the rich legacy she left us. Left this World!

Neuhtah, Dolly Parton, Luqman, Prince, and so many more we’ve lost are with her in that eternal jam session. But nevertheless, as I said at her memorial, Maritri Patrice Garrett Will “…Always Be In Our Hair." #RIPMaritri taken in Brooklyn, New York by @iammobeasley

April 23, 2026 I took my students to the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami's to view their work that was a part of the "Dissonance Young Artists Initiative 2026." And quite frankly I was in the most funky mood that day. That week!
For the past 16 years the week of April 21 - 23 has become the most "Bittersweet Week" of my life. April 21, 2016 my all-time favorite artist Prince died. April 22, 1984 my eldest babygirtl ITykara Oliver was born. (SO SWEET!), April 23, 2010 the mother of my youngest baby girl, passed way at the age of 35. #mostbitter.
Additionally, my artistic twin/greatest creative partner...Best Friend Maritri Garrett passed away just a month before, on March 3. to say I was not in a good space this day, is the quintessential overstatement. That was before I stepped off the elevator to this exhibit.
As soon my students, our dope ICA teaching artists Alysia and Jessie, and I got off the lift. I was struck by the second name on the long list of young artists showcased. REINA BEASLEY 😳 "uh, that's my child's name! My child is a part of this show too?!...Alyssa please take me to her work? Jessie please watch my. students?!" My first response to this lovely surprise. The image to the left of this message is baby girl's painting, "The Alley."
"The Alley" was inspired by a story I shared with Reina by the beautifully talented Gregory Porter.
I told baby girl about seeing Gregory on CBS Saturday Morning promoting his new album "Take Me To The Alley." Gregory tells the TV host that his mother inspired the song, Mother Porter told her son when the messiah returns he say, Take Me To The Alley", to the afflicted ones...this my baby girl's inspiration from that story...that song... taken in ICA Miami by @iammobeasley

Walked into the “Pantry”, aka The Teachers’ Lounge at work this morning, and was greeted by a lovely buffet of Sugars. 🤪. (Got mine ‘fore the rest of the staff got here. Perks of being 1st on Fridays. LOL).

But all jokes aside, that hand written note in the card makes it all worthwhile. I feel like a New Millennium Joe Clark someda…MOST days, because I have some students hell bent on undermining their intellectual might, and I constantly promise them that my commitment to their academic, and life, success is greater than their commitment to…foolishness. (And yes, it’s the boys that give me that greatestchallenge. And I’m here for it!). I stop at one of my favorite happy hour spots on my way home from work and see this post on IG. The most “likes” on ANY IG post I have EVER posted was about a Prince song and Maritri playing at Steinway Hall waaay back in 2000. The post has gotten close to 1K “ likes” just over a month ago, and it was her last communication to me before she left, and now I’m having trouble holding it together on this bar stool. When @Prince passed away 10years ago, this week between April 21-23 became the most Bittersweet Week of my life, ever since.

April 21, 2016 Prince died.

April 22, 1984 @iTykara Oliver was born. My eldest babygirl. 😊🎉🎊🍾🎈❤️

April 23, 2010 - Nicole Indi Dodd died. Mother of my youngest babygirl, Reina.

And this year, from here on out Maritri Garrett and I will never call each other to commiserate about the death of the Mutual Muse for our shows Mo Beasley's UrbanErotika & LoveSuites, because the other side of the same coin that was Maritri…is gone.

This is the only…”tribute” song that comes to my mind, and my heart, on this day… by @iammobeasley
