The last of my paternal grandparents transitioned this morning. 🤍

Grandma, I thank God for the life you gave me and for the blessing of being chosen as your only granddaughter. So much of who I am is rooted in the woman you were and the example you gave me.

My first board meetings were a result of you. Long before I understood what leadership meant I was watching you carry yourself with grace, poise, and purpose.

As I got older, you would always tell me to take “one day at a time.” I understand those words more deeply now than I ever have before.

Love. Forgive. Humanize.
You never know when you’ll be down to nothing.

Your grace and poise will be forever embedded in me.

Well done, Grandma.
Rest peacefully.

I may have a favorite candidate on the ballot🥴

I’m incredibly proud to watch my aunt be in the running to serve as the next State Representative for Florida House District 63. ❤️💙

For more than 40 years, she has served the Tampa Bay Area, not just talking about making a difference, but putting resources behind it. She has helped fund 15+ major organizations throughout the Bay Area, bringing thousands of dollars back into our city and supporting the people and organizations doing the work.

I’m excited to see her take that same commitment, experience, and results-driven leadership to District 63 and the entire State of Florida.

The Florida House will be better when she’s in it.

And yes… of course I did my research on all the candidates in this race.

Having an absent father didn’t mean there was an absence of fathering.

I’ve grown to love this day for the men (Uncles/brothers/cousins/grandparents) who have unconditionally provided love, safety and security for me. I love you all to infinity and I’m beyond grateful that you all answered the call to turn my potential into performance. You all are my hero’s!

Hey Adner,
I’m not exactly sure what I’m experiencing right now. Seeing your name still doesn’t feel real.
Over a decade of friendship and mentorship and for years everywhere you went I was “the little girl right behind you”.

I was behind you not because I needed you, but so you would always have something to lean on. I enjoyed every moment of being the impromptu assistant and designated driver. Seeing your goodness in real time has taught me so much.

Thank you, for being every letter of recommendation and always answering the call anytime I needed you. Thank you for always believing in me and speaking life into my abilities, you knew the story.

The last time I spoke to you, I stopped you from hanging up to tell you I love you and that’s the only thing helping me right now. You will be so missed. I know you’re enjoying heaven with Ms. Charlene and p.s don’t tell my mom too much lol.

Mental Health can look like this.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. My struggles with my mental health have been real, persistent and generational. If I wanted to reach my full potential the first step was to do what others before didn’t have access to and that was heal. I thank God for the version of Octavia I’m becoming, and I thank him for the versions of me that were doing the best it could.

Fit for a Queen…

My tears are a combination of how much I miss my mom and how much you’ve impacted me. It was this idea that Mama Dukes won’t be able to see the fruits of her labor vested in me come to fruition, but I know now you’ll be watching and guiding and protecting just from a different viewpoint.
