Not you.

You were my guy. My brother. My ace. When I didn’t have a place, you opened your home. You gave me a bed when I had nowhere to go and asked nothing in return. Long after I felt I overstayed my welcome, you’d hug me as I headed out and only ask when I’d be back.

You lit up the world with your presence, your talent, your dancing, your smile, and your jokes. You were a force behind the turntables. A beast in the booth.

But beyond the exuberance of your larger-than-life DJ persona, there was you. You were a real one. A sensitive soul with a huge heart and brilliant mind. Insanely creative and devastatingly funny. One of a kind.

We came together when we needed each other. You were broken hearted and so was I. I watched you grieve, struggle, and heal. I saw how giddy you were when you reunited with Sam and was ecstatic when you told me you were going to be a dad.

It made my days seeing videos of you and Felix dancing, beat juggling, and scratching.

Knowing where you were and seeing you in that place made me so happy.

I knew you were having health issues, but I had no idea it was so bad. You shrugged it off when I asked and told me it was nothing. My heart breaks knowing that you suffered in silence surrounded by a city that loved you.

I keep thinking of Sam, Felix, and your mom.

It’s hard to imagine a world without you.

You gave me so much. Your generosity allowed me to pursue my dream. Your encouragement lifted me up. You made me better. You made us all better.

I keep listening to your tape. Staring into space.

Heartbroken but grateful.

Thank you for being there for me. For looking out. For listening. For the laughs. For sharing a piece of your life with me.
