𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻’𝘀 interdisciplinary practice spans painting, printmaking, cut paper and installation, often using processes of fragmentation and reconstruction to explore material, pattern and form. Through cutting, layering and sewing, Anderson builds compositions that extend beyond conventional approaches to painting and emphasize the physical qualities of his materials. In his recent work, Anderson turns to new and recycled ripstop nylon, including upcycled spinnaker sails, creating sewn compositions that draw on the visual and symbolic language of flags. Traces of the materials’ previous use remain visible as Anderson reorganizes them into geometric forms that move between painting, sculpture and textile. The works consider the flag as an object associated with identity, belonging and collective meaning.

This Saturday, September 12, Anderson’s work will be presented alongside Alex Ebstein in 𝙍𝙚/𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙡𝙚 at PFA Washington, D.C. The exhibition brings together two distinct approaches to abstraction, material transformation and the reconstruction of familiar objects.

Reed Anderson’s autopoietic works are rooted in historic botanic textile patterns, graphic design principles, and color abstraction. Each work begins as large hand-cut paper stencils, then each stencil is repeatedly folded and painted upon itself in confounding patterns. The resultant work is both the tool and the object of its own creation. Flowers, cultivated from both natural and manufactured sources, such as in floral reproductions and representations in art, fashion, and design, feature frequently in Anderson’s work. Anderson sees flowers as “beacons of beauty” which, through their full lifecycle of birth, life, death, remind us of our impermanence and breed an appreciation of the present.

I have always loved sailing, and this is one of those strange summer paintings I made a decade ago while up in Canada and influenced by years of collaboration with the great @wolfypartii
…It was the year previous that I received a bag of used spinnaker sails from a neighbor and began thinking about making minimalist textile work from them. More of that coming in September to @pfa - stay tuned.
