ATLANTA, we lost a true legend with the passing of James L. “Mr. V” Virgil at the age of 85.

Mr. V was an entrepreneur, restaurateur, entertainment pioneer, community leader, and the visionary behind the legendary Mr. V’s Figure 8 on Campbellton Road, along with V’s on Peachtree and Mr. V’s Restaurant Equipment.

But for those of us who came up in Atlanta’s nightlife and entertainment business, Mr. V was much more than the owner of legendary establishments. He was a teacher, a mentor, and an example.

So many of us learned this business by watching him work, sitting with him, listening to him, or being fortunate enough to receive his mentorship. He understood that nightlife was about more than throwing a party, it was about relationships, hospitality, business, community, and creating a place where people felt like they belonged.

And Mr. V had the BEST stories. Stories about Atlanta, the nightlife business, entertainers, politicians, entrepreneurs, and most importantly, life. You could sit with him and get a history lesson, a business lesson, and a life lesson all in the same conversation.

The Figure 8 wasn’t just a nightclub. It was an Atlanta institution, a place where entertainers, athletes, political leaders, entrepreneurs, and Atlanta’s Black professional community came together.

Mr. V helped lay the foundation for so much of what Atlanta’s nightlife and entertainment culture would eventually become. Many of us who followed learned from the blueprint he created.

I’m grateful for the conversations, the stories, the wisdom, and the example.

Rest well, Mr. V. 🕊️

You taught the business. You lived the stories. You helped build the culture. Your legacy will always be a part of Atlanta.
