For me, seeing the word ‘spirituality’ in the description of a book is a bit like seeing the word ‘rail replacement bus’ on the train station departures board.

Rainn Wilson’s Soul Boom convinced me to be more open-minded.

The book, and the conversation I had with Rainn about, changed my perspective on the climate crisis — the nature of the challenge it presents, and how we face it.

One of my favourite interivew pieces for @imagine5_official.

Sometimes the daft jokes carry as much wisdom than the ‘serious’ stuff.

This series about incredible planet-fixing innovations that already exist is 60% ‘hehehe’ and 40% ‘no but actually that’s a good point’, which scientists have confirmed is the optimum ratio.

For me, interviewing people I admire is type 2 fun: great to look back on, terrifying in the moment.

And rarely have I felt so intellectually dwarfed as when I got to meet the wonderful Amitav Ghosh, whose novels I’ve been reading and recommending for half my adult life.

He couldn’t have been nicer, but of course I walked away cringing over stupid stuff I said. It always takes me a few weeks to look back and say, actually that went kind of well.

Anyway, check out Ghosh’s fantastic Ibis trilogy, which follows the lives of folks caught up in the opium wars, and The Nutmeg’s Curse, which will change how you look at the climate crisis.

So many myths, so little time. Here’s @imagine5_official’s attempt to stem the flow of climate misinformation. Words by me. If you like posts like this then the good news is, there are plenty more myths to bust.

What a pleasure it was to get to interview this guy about his new show. At @imagine5_official we’re always looking for the unexpected environmental heroes. Not the same old placard wavers, but proper cultural figures who have a different voice and a different reach. Zach G is a great example of that. More Zachs, please.

Loved both these books by @oureric. He lulls you into a false sense of security with 20 pages of lols and then he hits you with the feels. Recommend ❤️ by @iamrobertlb

What did we miss? I’ll start: How to Blow Up a Pipeline would have been a solid number 11. And… does Twisters count??

What’s best: train or plane?

I’m off to Amsterdam by train. Meanwhile, my colleague is flying. How do the two measure up in terms of time, cost and impact on the climate?

A note on data: Carbon emissions data is from travelandclimate.org, which uses a methodology developed by Chalmers University of Technology and KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. The total for the flight takes into account a taxi from the airport in Amsterdam to the city center.

A note on prices: The train ticket was booked about a week in advance in September 2023. The best price available for a train ticket was €216, and the best price for a flight booked that day was €80. The actual flight Nicolai took was booked earlier. If we’d booked the train earlier, we could have got a better deal, but still more expensive than the flight. by @iamrobertlb
