He lovvessssss helping me cook and bake in the kitchen. Using his hands with different tools, textures, smells — and the occasional taste…makes the day so much more enjoyable. 💜

We make ours like:
1) Cover eggs with 1” cold water and bring to rolling boil. Then remove from heat and cover for 12 minutes.
2) crack each egg before cooking in bowl of ice water
3) peel, toddler mash eggs in separate bowl
4) add squirt of Dijon mustard, yellow mustard, scoop of Mayo, green olive juice, and black pepper

It’s confusing when words are spelled the same but pronounced totally differently! Read, blessed…but there is a pattern for pronouncing your -ed endings in American English.
.
It has to do with voicing 🗣 this is when your vocal folds vibrate during a sound. Two sounds may be produced exactly the same with your tongue and mouth, but one is voiced and the other is voiceless. This it the case with /t/ and /d/.

Is it just me or is there something about little shoes that just warms the heart immediately? I came home today with my 2 year old and as I hung up his coat I looked down to see this, and suddenly felt so overcome with gratitude and warm fuzzies for all the time I get to spend with him. 💜 it’s not just about being a “SAHM” but goodness gracious am I glad I quit my job last year and now get to watch him grow, learn, develop, change, tell jokes, repeat things I say, video call his grandparents…all of it. I still don’t think I have the perfect SAHM personality/temperament, and I sure relish my two days/week I get to work at a coffee shop…but I wouldn’t trade a minute of this time with him. I know these shoes will soon be too small. He will soon no longer call me “silly mommy” when I make a joke, and very soon, he won’t be my only little guy around here. How I want to cherish and stay in front of my days with him. He is such an incredible witness to the newness awaiting me in life, and such a beautiful reminder of how much I am loved.

Aspiration! This is adding a little /h/ sound after /p/ /t/ and /k/ in American English.
This happens in word-initial position and at the onset (first sound) of a stressed syllable.
🐱 [kʰæt]
🐿 [ˈkʰɹɪ.ɾəɹ]
🥔 [pə.ˈtʰeɪ.ɾoʊ]

/p, t, k/ are the voiceless stops in SAE/American English and are ONLY aspirated in these phonological environments. i.e. no aspiration when they are a part of a cluster (spin or restart) and never in word-final position (sleep, peek, seat)

We are so blessed to have international priests at our parishes! These men are often BRILLIANT, highly educated, insightful, and HOLY priests who are risking a great deal to be here…missing their family, friends, and homes. While IT IS POSSIBLE for them to improve their comprehensibility in English, there are also lots of things WE CAN do as parishioners when we have a hard time understanding our priest during mass.
1. Read the readings beforehand! Great practice anyway!
2. Limit your distractions in the pew so you can focus
3. Sit near the front -up close!
4. Purposely attend more masses celebrated by this priest you find difficult to understand. This will help train your ear!
5. Focus on a spot to avoid cognitive overload
6. Focus on content/overall message, instead of getting tripped up on one word you missed
7. Pay attention during all 3 readings
8. Get to know this priest! Chat after mass. Invite him to a social. Show up to events he will be attending.
9. Ask him/parish if you can get a copy of the homily before mass- they almost always have it written and are usually HAPPY to do this!
10. Ask the parish if the homilies can be put in the bulletin each week

It’s easy to feel confused, intimidated, or even frustrated when you get a new international priest - especially if he’s difficult to understand!
🤩 But how blessed you are to gain a Catholic perspective from another part of the world!
🌍 How many languages can you speak? Most international priests are speaking English as their 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th language!
🙏 They need your support! Have you ever been abroad? It can be overwhelming!

I love adult learners because I know what it’s like to be an adult learner of a language (or 4). I know how to work with an analytical mind who needs to make sense of things before being able to produce them.
.
So when my new client (international priest from Italy) just asks out of the blue why it sounds like Americans add an /h/ after sounds like /k/ and /p/ as in “pop” or “copy” …well, my heart melts a little. What can I say 🤷‍♀️
