Ethan Hawke said once that the one in love always wins.

This is what he stirred up in me with his gorgeous words. There are no losers in love. You don’t win against them. You win against fear. My first and forever muse: my mommy. For the longest time, I didn’t see you. I chose to look past the creativity it takes to be an immigrant mother. I was too obsessed with my own pain. What an artist you are. The life you’ve created from nothing.

Save this for when you need some parental softness 🧸

This clip is from when I asked my parents for a do-over of my teenage coming out moment.

One of the things about growing up that they don’t tell you about is that your childhood room changes every time you come back. The house I grew up in since I was a teenager has become versions of my family’s storage closet and home office. It’s also become something of a gallery walk because my dad has started putting up on the walls old letters I’d given him that he found in the archive. One such letter was my coming out message to my parents, from over a decade ago.

Something came over me as I read it. I saw how pure my heart was and I saw how much I desperately wanted my parents to love me.

Their lack of acceptance throughout my life, but especially at that moment of vulnerability from their child, is what contributed to this story I’ve carried: that I need to prove to everyone I’m lovable.

Over years of practice at being a human in relationships, I got sick of that story. I saw how I was hurting myself. I decided to change it. No one, not even my parents, decides my value. I’ve been unconditionally important since before I was born.

As these new stories took hold in my body, everything changed. From the way I walked to the way I ate. Every room I was in was lucky to have me. Every body ache was a message I took seriously. I treated myself like the temple I’ve always been. And I got very selective with who is allowed entry.

So I guess my decision to come out (again) was a natural inclination: to face the people that gave me some of my original wounds and expose my heart. But this time, with the reassurance that I could hold myself.

Man, does anything make you cry like your parents saying something like “I’m proud of you”? I know I’m one lucky girl for even hearing that once, because I know millions of people never hear it.

For a long time, I doubted how I even remembered this experience. And truthfully, memory is unreliable. Each time we remember something, we tend to recreate the narrative conveniently based on our discretion. It isn’t like a pulling an unchanged file from a cabinet. So what if this whole story was false? What does that change about my self-image?

Read more at the link in my bio. I love you.

For Jane Doe of Cornell, and all of the anonymous women through history.

For Gisele Pelicot, r*ped for years by her husband and dozens of men invited to their home via online forums.

For the massage workers slaughtered in 2021 by a man who was having a “bad day” and had a “temptation he had to eliminate”, according to police.

For the South Korean women who refuse to get married or give birth until they have equal rights and treatment.

Where the heck is the scene where I learn my lesson and the lighting is perfect? Where is the music that plays during the credits and everyone watching adores me?

Somehow, making my own movies as a writer and director has reminded me that I am the main character after all. Read the full piece, no details spared, on my Substack. Support my writing and filmmaking by becoming a subscriber <3

Most days I feel the defiance of “I am a mother anyway, with or without a womb.”

But some days, I ask myself, “Why did I come here as a woman without a womb? What was I meant to learn from this perceived lack?”

As my family and friends age into motherhood, I think about the things I’m missing. Is there a kind of FOMO that can compete with this?

Womblessness has forced me to find that source of life inside myself beyond the body. by @iamsongha
