We’re stoked to introduce our final feature for the pilot episode of Diaspora Diaries, Lissah! This project is nothing without the folks we’re highlighting and Lissah’s work is extraordinary. 🌱Keep reading to learn a bit more about Lissah and stay tuned for all the beautiful things to come. Lissah Mason is a Land and Community Steward, working to improve the ecosystem of care for members of the African Diaspora and Native/Indigenous communities by organizing cultural events and gathering spaces, mutual aid efforts, accessible wellness services, and educational programs. Over the past 12 years she has been an active grassroots community organizer and social justice movement worker in Chicago, Tuskegee, Huntsville (AL) and San Diego. Lissah is the co-founder of (Re)Birth Society and serves as the Community Building and Education Coordinator at Chicago South Side Birth Center. She is a Full Spectrum Doula and CAPPA Childbirth Educator. With a decade of education and experience in the field of plant-spirit medicine, she is an herbalist, rootworker, and continuing student of the natural world. In addition to her wellness work, Lissah is a researcher, teacher and archivist, with a focus on Hoodoo and African-Indigenous cultural history and heritage. She leads a life of creativity and commitment to the total liberation of the Earth and the People. by @iamthecreatress

I woke up with this prayer in my heart. Full of gratitude. Taylor, Juju, Sara, Briana, Nia, Shon, Angel, Alycia, Simone, Nesha, Ebony, “Busy”, Charles, Baba Valroy, Jah, Jasmine, Kinn, Ca$h, Bianca, Malaquita, Peyton, Donisha, Zeb, Emanuel Bas Night, all of the volunteers from every event we held this Hoodoo Heritage Month, Brown Ppl Foundation, CUSP, Chicago South Side Birth Center, UMedics, Bless the Roads, The Breathing Room— … thank you from the depths of my heart. I’m spending this week in rest and reflection. Giving thanks for sisterhood, for real tangible community, for thought partners, for show-uppers, for shared vision and everything needed to bring it to fruition. I process things SUPER slowly so I will be sitting with this for a WHILE but I just wanted to take a moment to give my most sincere thanks to everyone who helped make everything happen. It’s real We/Us around these parts and I am most proud of that. Join us for the 3rd Annual Hoodoo Heritage Festival taking place on Sunday November 2nd from 3p to 8p at South Shore Cultural Center! This event is a yearly communal celebration of African-American cultural history and spiritual traditions, and their roles in our liberation! This is an intentionally intergenerational space, and one created for Black, African-American, Afro-American, Caribbean-American, African-Indigenous and Native Indigenous people 🤍We have so much in store for our hoodoo kin this year!
