“An IRS Revenue Officer contacted me. What should I do now?”

A Revenue Officer is an IRS collection employee assigned to work certain delinquent tax cases.

If one has contacted you, take the communication seriously—but don't assume you have to answer every question immediately without first understanding your situation.

Start by determining:

• Which tax periods are involved
• Whether all required returns have been filed
• What financial information is being requested
• What deadlines have been given
• What collection or resolution options may apply

Revenue Officer cases can involve detailed financial review and ongoing communication with the IRS.

Preparation matters.

Before responding, understand the case and the information you're being asked to provide.

Depending on your situation, we may be able to work with the Revenue Officer so you don't have to.

“Can the IRS garnish my paycheck for back taxes?”

The IRS can levy wages when collection requirements have been met and the tax debt remains unresolved.

Unlike a one-time collection from a bank account, a wage levy can continue against future pay until it is released or the underlying collection issue is otherwise resolved.

If you're facing a wage levy, the question isn't only:

“How do I stop this deduction?”

It's also:

“Why did the case reach this point, and what resolution addresses the tax debt going forward?”

That may require reviewing your notices, tax periods, filing status, finances, and available collection alternatives.

Address the immediate levy—but don't lose sight of the underlying IRS problem.

Get help with an IRS wage garnishment. Call us at 346-642-5577 to learn more about your options.

“Can the IRS really take money directly from my bank account?”

Yes. Under the right circumstances, the IRS can levy funds in a bank account to collect unpaid federal taxes.

But a bank levy generally doesn't appear out of nowhere.

There is a collection process, and the notices you've received can be important in determining where your case stands and what rights or options may still be available.

If you've received levy notices—or a bank has already notified you of an IRS levy—timing matters.

Don't assume that sending a random payment or immediately agreeing to a payment plan is automatically the right solution.

First determine what the IRS has done, what deadlines apply, and what resolution strategy fits the underlying tax problem.

The earlier you understand the collection stage, the more informed your next decision can be.

“The IRS filed a tax lien against me. What does that actually mean?”

A federal tax lien is the government's legal claim against your property when a tax debt remains unpaid after the required collection steps.

It does **not** mean the IRS has automatically taken your home, business, or other property.

But it can have real consequences.

A filed Notice of Federal Tax Lien can affect your interests in property and create complications when you're trying to sell, refinance, or deal with other creditors.

What happens next depends on the tax debt, your circumstances, and where the case is in the IRS collection process.

Before assuming the lien can simply be “removed,” understand the difference between lien release, withdrawal, discharge, and subordination—and which, if any, applies to your situation.

“I received an IRS collection notice. What happens if I don't respond?”

An IRS notice shouldn't be ignored—but receiving one doesn't mean you should panic, either.

Start by identifying exactly what the IRS sent you.

Different notices can involve different issues, deadlines, collection actions, and taxpayer rights. Where you are in the collection process matters.

Before responding, determine:
• What tax periods are involved?
• What is the IRS requesting?
• Is there a response or appeal deadline?
• Has collection activity already progressed?
• What resolution options are available?

The goal isn't simply to “do something” because a notice arrived.

It's to understand what the notice means and make the right next move.

If you're unsure what you're looking at, an IRS problem assessment can help clarify where the case stands.

“I owe the IRS more than I can afford to pay. What are my options?”

Owing more than you can pay at once does not automatically mean you have to come up with the full balance immediately.

The right next step depends on more than how much you owe.

The IRS may consider factors such as your income, necessary living expenses, assets, filing compliance, and ability to pay when determining how a tax debt can be addressed.

Depending on the circumstances, options may include a payment arrangement, an Offer in Compromise, temporary collection relief, or another resolution strategy.

The important part is determining which option actually fits your financial situation before committing to one.

Explore your options before making a decision that may be difficult to maintain.

If the IRS requests additional information, the ability to quickly locate your records can make the process much smoother.

Consider maintaining digital copies of:
• IRS notices
• Filed tax returns
• Payment confirmations
• Business records
• Payroll reports
• Correspondence with the IRS

Keeping organized records isn't just good bookkeeping. It helps you respond more confidently if questions arise.

Whether you're managing an installment agreement, resolving a notice, or preparing documentation for a tax professional, having everything in one place can significantly reduce delays.

Organization won't eliminate every tax issue, but it often makes resolving one much easier.

Taxpayers are often surprised to learn that an IRS balance rarely remains unchanged.

Even if you already know what you owe, additional amounts can continue to accumulate through interest and certain penalties until the balance is resolved.

That's why waiting often becomes more expensive than taking action.

Resolving an IRS balance doesn't always mean paying it in full immediately.

Depending on your circumstances, there may be options that allow you to:
👉 Establish a payment arrangement
👉 Request penalty relief when appropriate
👉 Resolve collection activity
👉 Develop a long-term strategy based on your financial situation

Every case is different, but understanding your options early can make a meaningful difference.

Finding a letter from the IRS in your mailbox is enough to make most people anxious.

But here's something many taxpayers don't realize:

Not every IRS notice is bad news, and not every notice requires the same response.

The IRS sends dozens of different notices throughout the collection and compliance process.

Some are simply informational, while others require action within a specific timeframe.

Depending on the notice, the IRS may be:
📄 Requesting additional information
📄 Explaining a change made to your tax account
📄 Notifying you of a balance due
📄 Reminding you of an upcoming payment
📄 Advising you that collection activity may begin if the issue isn't resolved

This is why the notice number and the reason it was sent are often more important than the envelope itself.

Many taxpayers make one of two mistakes:

They panic and assume the worst...

Or they ignore the letter altogether because they don't know what it means.

Neither approach helps.

Instead, take a few moments to understand what the IRS is communicating, review any deadlines, and determine whether a response is required.

In many cases, acting early gives you more flexibility and can help prevent the issue from becoming more complicated.

An IRS notice is the beginning of a conversation. Not necessarily the end of your options.

The key is knowing what the notice says before deciding what to do next.

Have questions about an IRS notice you've received?

An IRS Problem Assessment can help you understand what the notice means and what options may be available based on your situation.

⚠️ It doesn't have to come to this.

Last week, rapper Twista pleaded guilty to federal tax crimes after authorities alleged years of willfully failing to pay income taxes.

According to the IRS, the case involved more than simply owing money. It included repeated warnings and actions intended to avoid collection.

Here's what I want people to understand:

Owing the IRS doesn't automatically make you a criminal.

Most tax debt cases are resolved through payment plans, settlements, or other civil resolution options.

The biggest mistake I see isn't the tax debt itself.

It's ignoring the problem until your options become more limited.

If you've received IRS notices, have unfiled returns, or simply don't know where to start, don't wait for the situation to escalate.

The earlier you understand your options, the more control you have.

It doesn't have to come to this.
