From my interview with @tv5mondeinfo in French about President Joseph Aoun’s visit to Washington and the new realities on the ground in implementing the Lebanon-Israel framework agreement. Why the 2024 deal failed, and how the new framework could work. by @iamvanbaptiste

I was just talking about the possibility that Iran is bluffing—threatening to open new fronts with Israel if Netanyahu goes ahead and attacks Beirut again—in hopes that the U.S. would pressure Israel to back off at this critical moment for U.S. talks with Iran and for international commerce and travel through the Middle East.
A few minutes later, the U.S. president announced that the Beirut attack is off and Israel will not strike.

Will conflicts in the Middle East ever end, or are they destined to continue and keep evolving into a never-ending struggle? Is it in Israel’s national security interest to end these wars and build peaceful relations with all its neighbors, as it did with Egypt and Jordan after the wars of 1967 and 1973? Could a change in Israeli leadership this October, or a revolution in Iran, bring the current war to an end?

How would this conflict end without one side destroying the other?

Two years after the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, are relations between Damascus and Beirut on the basis of mutual respect possible? Or is Lebanon destined to become yet another battleground where regional powers settle their scores, regardless of who governs in Syria? taken in Beirut, Lebanon by @iamvanbaptiste

🇱🇧🇺🇸President Joseph Aoun : I would like to thank President Trump and his team for the historic visit and for the historic achievement that we did together by signing the framework with the ultimate objective of ending the state of hostility between Lebanon and Israel forever. I think, Mr. President, this will be your legacy. Together, we’ll be able to achieve this objective. It’s about time for Lebanon and for the whole region to be stable and secure, and I know your vision is peace, your vision is stability, and I think my vision is your vision, and together, I think we will be able reach our objectives. by @iamvanbaptiste

Lindsey Graham was one of the American voices insisting that Lebanon still mattered.
He pushed for a major defense agreement with the US just a few months ago.

During his last visit to Beirut on August 26, 2025, he described the country as being at a turning point and argued that the United States should support a path that would strengthen the Lebanese state and its army.

What stood out most in his message was his call for a deeper security relationship between Lebanon and the United States. He did not just speak about short-term aid; he raised the possibility of a defense agreement, saying Lebanon’s religious diversity was something worth defending and that such an agreement could significantly reshape the country.

He was also a close ally of Israel and Ukraine and a fierce enemy of the Iranian regime.
