Our design for this mountain residence located in the foothills of Japan’s Yakushima Island, takes the user on a journey through a tiered home that is emblematic of the journey to the home itself.

Yakushima is a small island off the southern tip of Japan which endures four times as much rainfall compared to the rest of the country. This, coupled with the diversity in landscapes, provides an opportunity for incredible views and experiences within the home.

The circular plan is opened up to denote a clear entry, with the interior accessible through multiple tiers, each with their distinct view toward the ocean, forest, and mountains. The roof is pitched to allow for drainage toward the central garden, creating a zen-like atmosphere in the center of the home for the majority of the year.

The home is comprised of an expansive living and dining area with an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, a traditional Japanese sauna, cold plunge, and hamam, and three bedrooms. Each section of the home is on a distinct floor elevation with outdoor spaces separating each space and accessible directly from the interior hallway that acts as the primary circulation throughout the home.

The project was designed in collaboration with @atelierpowder (@alescornet) with visualizations provided by @wedovisuals. taken in Yakushima Island by @ian.a.bentley

New work for @tachinyc

A two-room sake bar and 12-seat sushi counter located in the center of Manhattan. Tachi brings together contrasting textures working in harmony to create a space that is both honoring traditional japanese design while looking forward and incorporating the energy of New York.

Polished marble, warm Hinoki wood and razor-thin metal complement a 25-foot long hand-painted mural that set the scene for traditional omakase, à la carte sushi, and craft sake.

Tachi officially opens on Thursday 3/26 and in old New York fashion, there are no reservations so just walk right in.
