Update: the empty camera now has film in it. A friend donated some expired Super 8, so this is the test roll before the real one. 50 feet. 3 minutes 20 seconds. Edited in camera, in order, in one go. No retakes, no sound, no idea if any of it will come out. Day job: @sonyprofilmmaking Burano. This month: a camera older than most the crew. Grew up in Hampstead and Highgate. Never once set foot in Highgate Cemetery. Forty-odd years, five minutes away. Very on brand. So with a free Sunday I went for a wander round north London looking for the Black British figures who lived, worked and are buried on my doorstep. Turns out there’s a lot of them. 📍 Leslie “Hutch” Hutchinson (1900–1969) Grenadian-born singer and pianist who had London’s West End and café society eating out of his hand in the 20s and 30s. Velvet voice, flamboyant life. His blue plaque is on Steele’s Road, so I paid my respects and then a pint of water at the Sir Richard Steele’s. Wild times. 📍 Claudia Jones (1915–1964) Trinidadian-born journalist and activist. Founded The West Indian Gazette, Britain’s first major Black weekly paper, and helped start what became Notting Hill Carnival. She’s buried right next to Karl Marx, which feels about right. 📍 Stuart Hall (1932–2014) Jamaican-born cultural theorist, one of the founding figures of cultural studies and a big reason we talk about identity and multiculturalism the way we do. His headstone just says “Radical Intellectual.” Hard to argue. Black history isn’t just for October. And with diversity getting talked about a lot less lately, it felt like a good day to go and say hello. Highly recommend. LOOKING FOR A DEAF MUSIC PRODUCER I’m making a short film on one roll of Super 8. It’s 3 minutes 20 seconds, edited in camera, with no retakes and no sound. It’s about a young Deaf performer at their first rave, and it’s being shot with the brilliant @deafrave crew on 31 October. Super 8 records no sound, so the soundtrack gets made separately. I’d love it to come from a Deaf producer who knows how music feels: bass you get through the floor, not just through your ears. Honest bit: there’s a small budget. At the premiere at Battersea Power Station the other night, the credits rolled and nobody moved. The room sat in silence for about 20 seconds. Nobody clapped and nobody reached for their phone. Everyone was just taking in what they’d seen. For anyone who makes films, that’s the reaction you hope for. Lewis Moody vs MND* is on TNT Sports 1 and HBO Max tonight at 10pm. I was DOP, and it’s one of the hardest films I’ve ever worked on. That’s not down to the people, who were lovely, or the logistics, which behaved. It’s down to what Lewis and his family are going through. We shot it all handheld on the Burano, FX6s and FX3s with anamorphic glass (my shoulders have filed a formal complaint). There were four of us on the crew, we worked around the school run, and we filmed some of Lewis’s most private moments with his family. Filming in Mexico City: great light, great crew, a genuinely good shoot. Then the trip decided to add a final act — cancelled flight, mystery voucher, a hotel booking that felt more like a hostage negotiation, a carnet situation nobody warned me about, and enough camera bags to make check-in staff visibly reconsider their career choices. Currently writing this from an airport, technically still “in transit,” spiritually just stuck under a luggage trolley. But the highs were good enough to drown out most of the chaos.
