The last old growth of Willapa Bay, WA!
274 acres of incredible thousand year old cedars interspersed with huge stumps where they’d begun to be chopped by Weyerhaeuser in the 70s. Thankfully, a deal was made to protect the last grove on the 5,500 acre island, but the rest had already been logged and is now shadowy even aged hemlock forest. Across the bay we found more ancient cedars that were saved from felling later on in the 90s. Beautiful big trees, but everything around them was cleared so now it’s another dark thicket of hemlock. Old growth and mature temperate rainforests are incredibly ecologically important and can capture and store more carbon than almost any other ecosystem on earth. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these forests gets logged on very short rotations and never get to live up to this potential. by @ianfreeperson

Wandered the Gifford Pinchot and found the mystical Lost Creek Grove (some of the last old growth forest in the vicinity of the Columbia river gorge). And Brendan obliged me and stood next to every tree for scale 👍 taken in Gifford Pinchot National Forest by @ianfreeperson
