Book #3, Everyday We Say, is out now! You can find the links to order it in my bio! The best way to support is by ordering it through the @shoutmousepress website. This book was honestly fantastic to work on and there’s so much more I’ll be sharing in the coming weeks!

The official book launch event will be on Sunday, March 8 at 4PM at Busboys and Poets on 625 Monroe Street Northeast.

It was an honor to work with all of the young authors and bring their experiences and unique perspectives to life through illustration! I really am proud of the work we were able to achieve.

I’m excited to finally share my artwork from the newest children’s book I fully illustrated for @shoutmousepress , Every Day We Say! The book officially launched last week and can be ordered now! Visit the links in my bio to order the book today!

Everyday We Say is a children’s board book where diverse kids and parents model self-kindness and confidence as they learn to use daily affirmations to celebrate themselves. It teaches both children and their parents to be kind to themselves and to positively affirm all of their own unique qualities.

This book has truly been special for me. It really did help me to find a distinct voice as an artist moving forward and also refine my artistic style. I will talk more in-depth about my artistic journey with this book in individual posts coming soon! This was the culmination of a lot of hard-work, adversity, passion, and determination to always learn and push myself and my craft.

I really hope children are able to see themselves and relate to many of the scenarios that are present in this book. I also hope parents are reassured that the work that they do to support their children mentally really does matter and is important!

Showing off a bit of the behind the scenes of my process, studies, and things I consider when creating characters for any project. My goal with these illustrations were to study shapes and how they impact character design and uniqueness, practice using silhouettes to create movement and convey a narrative, and to incorporate elements of my artistic style that could translate across different genres. I wanted to create more cohesion across the different genres I can illustrate.

Juneteenth acts a signal of Black freedom, expression, joy, determination, as well as a call to remember the history that has shaped us to continue on and that has opened many doors of possibilities for us. I’ve had the honor for the past 7 years to continue on the legacy of the ancestors within the professional world of illustration by amplifying Black characters within the KidLit genre and in general illustration media, helping to provide a voice for other young Black creators and authors, and by continuing to strive for greater heights in a field where there still aren’t many of us.

I wanted to post a collage of many different Black characters I’ve illustrated over the past years in honor of Juneteenth. None of this would be possible without the hard-work, struggles, and sacrifices that our ancestors went through, and I am always deeply thankfully. My goal as an illustrator has been to depict us in a joyful and colorful way and I only hope that audiences feel that passion through my work.

As Black illustrators and artists, we will continue to make and impact and share our unique voices with the world!

A mockup children’s book spread I created over the past few days. I wanted to experience with some more intense lighting, environmental illustration, a limited color palette, and storytelling. Definitely proud with how this came out!

Here’s a children’s book spot illustration study. I was trying out some different techniques and doing a little style study.

Books About Us Matter! 📚✊🏾

This is an editorial/children’s genre pieces that I created to support the idea that children’s books that represent Black people need to continue to be shared and promoted, especially now. This illustration was also inspired by my mother, as she used to constantly read as a little girl and was always looking for characters who looked like her.

A shocking statistic within the children’s book and illustration genre is that 50% of books and illustrations within the market are primarily white character-focused, 27% are animal character focused, 10% are black character-focused, and even smaller percentages are Latino/Asian/Native American focused.

This needs to continued to be challenged! Underrepresented voices and perspectives need to be heard and it is crucial that we start sharing these perspectives to children at young ages. Children need to see characters that look like them.

As shown in the graphic I created, you can find more information about Black and POC children’s books at www.mahoganybooks.com. You can also always support the many different authors and illustrators behind these books, as well as some of the publishers!

I hope to continue to challenge the established stereotypes in the industry and bring more diversity to the market.

It’s been a busy 3 months! I’ve been hard at work on another children’s book project that will be releasing next year! In the meantime, I thought I would share a piece of concept art that I did during a workshop for the project!
