I'm reuploading this for a few reasons:
Compositionally, I think this is one of my better creations. But I've had a falling out with the original model for the knight. Lately I haven't been able to look at this without shuddering. So, I've altered the face into a new portrait. What's more, this new knight is going to be the main character of a fantasy comedy-romance I'm going to be working on as soon as my current novel project is finished. Indeed, this image now depicts the first incident that happens in the story. So, I can now look at this and draw (so to speak) inspiration from it. by @ianpatrickmchugh

Re-uploaded without the border. Seemed like the thing to do for the advent of Autumn.

"Handsome-But-Cruel Catman and the Elegant Spaniel," 2017

A double portrait of myself and my husband, Gene Bertram, respectively, as our favorite animals.

I plan on doing a lot more drawing after I'm done with a large writing project. Actually, one of the first things I've got lined-up are illustrations for that same big writing project, so stay turned! by @ianpatrickmchugh

Client: "And what is the name of the game in the world today?"
Rumpole: "Space Invaders!"

Ever since I heard Rumpole say that line from "Rumpole and the Last Resort," from 'Rumpole of the Bailey,' Series 3, Episode 6 (11/15/1983), I've been meaning to draw the great barrister at law, Horace Rumpole, playing that classic game on a classic 1980s cocktail table arcade cabinet in Pommeroy's Wine Bar.

And now, probably close to twenty years later, I've finally completed a rendition of the scene: Rumpole, down to just 20p, the last remnants of from his legal aid cheque, obliterates the final alien and declares it a "Famous victory" after hours and hours of gameplay (as well as glass after glass or Pommeroy's plonk).

Rumpole's not yet aware that a whole new swarm of aliens will appear, descending even faster than before...

And he's not yet aware that since the game never ends, it's the number of points that matters, and he hadn't been paying attention to his score...

For that brief moment, he experiences his finest hour since the Penge Bungalow Murders (in which he won the case alone and without a leader). But then, when the aliens reappear, he'll stagger back and mutter:
"A winged Goddess, clothed in vesture wrought
Of rainbow colours; One whose port was bold,
Whose overburthened hand could scarcely hold
The glittering crowns and garlands that it brought,
Hovered in air above the far-famed Spot.
She vanished – leaving prospect blank and cold!"

He then retreats to Temple Tube Station and, finally, a slow trudge up the steps of Foxbury Mansions to the impatiently waiting "She."

(Also included here at Pommeroy's are Soapy Sam Ballard QC, Phyllida Erskine-Brown QC, Claude Erskine-Brown (not a QC until the 90s), Uncle Tom, and [at the back, in blue, and holding a cigarette] Sir John Mortimer QC, the author and creator of the Rumpole stories.)

I hope Pelgrave won't get mad at me for sharing this while I'm still correcting the proofs, but I am just so excited to get a book published!

This is a really big thing for me. I never felt like I was equal to my colleagues, so I always harbored a doubt that I could ever get anything into print. It's one of the reasons why I never submitted anything to any journal. I don't think I could have gotten over the rejection. It would just confirm what I already believed was true about me: that I didn't have anything to say that anyone would be interested in hearing, or that I would not be able to communicate it compellingly.

Of course, that's not all that went on within me, and I kept writing and doing research in spite of my fears. Still, I confined myself to presentations rather than submissions, which has a lower threshold of expected excellence (Ditto for doctoral dissertations, really. I saw some of them and said, "Well, even I can do that!"). But things changed when Pelgrave INVITED me to submit some sample chapters based off of a paper I presented in Bonn. That made me feel like I could, perhaps, make some kind of difference in my field after all! And now, I'm going to have a full-blown book published by (knock on wood) the end of September! by @ianpatrickmchugh
