What inspires you to volunteer? 💙

Maybe it’s compassion, solidarity, a sense of justice or simply the belief that we can make things better when we show up for one another.

This #WorldValuesDay, we’re reflecting on the values that bring people to volunteering and the many ways they put those values into action, whether by sharing their time, skills or simply being there for someone who needs it.

That same spirit of generosity is at the heart of Generosity Week, December 1–5, co-organized by IAVE and GivingTuesday. It’s a reminder that we all have something to give, and that even small acts can make a difference.

Time, attention, and care are all forms of generosity. 🫶

Ten years ago, one idea started in Chisinau, Moldova: what if volunteers could offer older neighbors more than one-time help?
That idea became Origins of Mercy, a program from Volunteer Center RVC where volunteers visit people at home, check in by phone, deliver food, organize events, and simply spend time together.

Today, 450 long-term volunteers support 1,500 older people across three cities in Moldova. And the impact has grown beyond that, helping form an international volunteer network across six countries.

As founder Nicolai Railean says, "The most important part is not one-time assistance, but relationships that can continue for years."

What makes people want to give their time, skills and resources again?

Join us for the next Generosity Week webinar, Designing Giving as an Experience, on October 7 at 1:30 PM UTC.

Co-led by IAVE’s Wendy Osborne and GivingTuesday’s Anita Gallagher, the webinar will explore how to create volunteering and giving experiences that make people feel valued and want to come back.

The conversation will feature Lindsay Armstrong of Volunteer Now, sharing lessons from 29 years of recruiting and retaining volunteers, and Michelly Felix of Volunteers Sonora, sharing what her team has learned from running eight GivingTuesday giving circles in Hermosillo, Mexico.

Part of the Generosity Week webinar series, the session leads up to December 1–5, when individuals and organizations around the world will come together to give their time, skills and resources.

Join IAVE and GivingTuesday for Generosity at Work, a hands-on session on how companies can mobilize employees during Generosity Week, December 1–5.

For ten years, Hazel McLean kept advocating for a welcoming space where older people in Belfast City Centre could connect, find company, and feel part of their community. Her persistence eventually helped turn that idea into a weekly drop-in center, one that continues to thrive through the generosity of volunteers.

It’s a powerful reminder that volunteering isn’t just about giving time. It’s about seeing what your community needs and staying committed to making it possible.
