My research trip through Italy is officially a wrap.

Rome, Milan, Bologna: each city brought new conversations, new collaborators, and new theatre, including an adaptation of an American play on an Italian stage. And a meaningful stay in Perugia to observe and reconnect with the company that started this whole journey. The heart of this trip was fieldwork with intercultural theatre companies doing necessary work: building community through performance, presence, and dialogue.

And somewhere in between, I managed to squeeze in some quality time with my mom, cousin, and my best friend.

The work continues.

Full circle moment. Back at Il Calice, where after a difficult experience I sat and wrote, finding myself curious about contemporary Italian theatre. Grateful for the challenging moments that led me to engage with transformative Italian theatre makers and migrant artists taken in Il Calice Wine Bar and Food by @ibbified

Officially on vacation after an intense academic year. In the words of one Matt DiCintio, “Don’t call me, don’t email me, don’t text me.”

Thank you Mysia, Christin, and Hesam for sharing space with me and discussing critique as an act of love. When we say love, we are referencing bell hooks’ definition of love - not a feeling, but an ethical orientation towards social justice. Our audience was engaged and asked excellent question pushing us to think more about our methodologies.

And look out for our work:

I celebrate every year I’m on this earth. This year my favorite photo of me is jet lagged, senza photoshop, and realizing my childhood dream of being able to sustain my life as an actor doing work that makes a real difference in people’s lives.
Also, Sabrina.

Creating activist art alongside my Human Beings Theatre family has been full of heart, exhaustion, and desire. With the precarious state of the world, I am reminded through my fellow artists and activists that hope is possible. We do not deny the pain or the tears, but we use our broken hearts to continue to do the work and support one another. We continue to find each other and, led by Danilo Cremonte for 30 years, change happens on a local level in the lives of the artists and Perugians. Evidence of a ripple effect is clear based on how our work is directly in conversation with local and global leaders. #humanbeingstheatre #teatrorifugio #bethechange #radicalchange #pianopiano taken in HUMAN BEINGS International cross cultural theatre workshop by @ibbified

In one week I will back with my people in Perugia. Our show “Tutto vale” is having another run as part the Perugia-Assisi March for Peace programming. We will be performing for our beloved Perugian public as well as local and global policy makers. In a world that can feel so hopeless, I’m so lucky to have my Human Beings Theatre family and be part of the change we want to see.

As my friend and artistic collaborator, @anna.poppiti , reminded me this summer, pain often accompanies growth. The last three months, we, Human Beings Theatre, have learned so much from each other and worked to find common ground despite cultural and language barriers. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Yes, intentionally moving outside of your comfort zone to connect with folks from seemingly different worlds is worth it. Human Beings Theatre creates a space for what’s possible. What’s possible when we wrestle with discomfort, confront ourselves, and pass through pain to find joy and connection.
