Norbert Rillieux: The Black Inventor Who Revolutionized Sugar Refining Remember his name: Norbert Rillieux. Behind the sugar industry’s transformation was a brilliant Black inventor whose name deserves recognition. Born in 1806, Norbert Rillieux became one of the earliest pioneers of chemical engineering. His groundbreaking invention—the multiple-effect evaporator under vacuum—changed how sugar cane juice was processed into sugar. Before his innovation, workers transferred boiling juice between open kettles, a dangerous process that wasted heat and made consistent quality difficult to achieve. Rillieux developed a system that reused vapor from one vessel to heat the next. Working under reduced pressure allowed the juice to boil at lower temperatures, saving fuel and producing better-quality sugar at a lower cost. His achievement went beyond improving a product. He demonstrated how scientific understanding could transform an entire industrial process. Black history includes the thinkers, engineers and inventors who helped shape the world we live in. Born in 1957 in Jefferson City, Tennessee, Dean demonstrated an exceptional ability to understand and build technology from an early age. After earning his engineering degree, he joined IBM in 1980—just as the company was developing its first personal computer. Dean became a key member of the team responsible for creating the original IBM Personal Computer, released in 1981. He holds three of the nine original patents associated with that groundbreaking machine. One of his most important contributions was helping develop the computer’s expansion-bus architecture. This technology allowed external devices—including printers, modems, monitors and additional storage—to connect and communicate with the computer. That ability to expand and customize a computer became a defining feature of the personal-computer industry. Dean later led a team that developed a powerful one-gigahertz computer processor, capable of performing approximately one billion calculations every second. In 1996, he became the first Black person named an IBM Fellow—the company’s highest technical distinction. His inventions helped move computers out of specialized laboratories and offices and into homes, schools and businesses around the world. Jerry Lawson: The Black Video Game Inventor Who Pioneered the Removable Cartridge Remember his name: Jerry Lawson. Jerry Lawson was a pioneering Black inventor and engineer whose innovations helped transform video games from fixed machines into systems capable of playing multiple games. During the 1970s, Lawson worked at Fairchild Semiconductor, where he became one of the few Black engineers working in the rapidly developing technology industry. As director of engineering and marketing for Fairchild’s video game division, Lawson led the team that developed the Fairchild Channel F, released in 1976. The Channel F was the first commercial home video game console designed around interchangeable, programmable game cartridges. Before this innovation, most home systems contained games permanently built into the hardware. Its removable cartridges allowed consumers to purchase new games without replacing the entire console. This concept helped establish the business and technological model later adopted by companies such as Atari, Nintendo and Sega. Lawson also designed an early coin-operated arcade game called Demolition Derby and later founded Videosoft, one of the earliest Black-owned video game development companies. He entered an industry in which very few Black engineers were visible, yet his leadership helped shape the future of home entertainment. Every time players insert a game cartridge—or download a new title onto one gaming system—they are experiencing the evolution of an idea Jerry Lawson helped pioneer. Jerry Lawson passed away in 2011, but his influence remains embedded in the global video game industry. Remember the name. Remember the invention. Remember the legacy.
