Today Lana would be 17 years old. Not a day goes by when I don’t think of her. Her presence is everywhere, and most strongly it’s a feeling of the lack of things. She’s not asleep on the bed when I come home. I don’t ask her, “do you want breakfast?” She’s not lying by the window with sunlight beaming onto her, fascinated by the squirrels. And no, Mr. Squirrel, you still can’t come in.
When she was just a few years old, she would howl at the moon because she had never been spayed. The howling grew progressively worse and finally unbearable. When I could take no more, I told her we would have to get her spayed, and called the vet to make an appointment. While I was on the phone, I could see her walking up next to me, and listening to the conversation. As I completed the appointment, she crept up the stairs. When I found her, her whole body was shaking in fear. So I made her a deal … If she would stop howling, I’d cancel the appointment. She calmed down at the prospect. For the next 14 years she never howled again. #cats #persiancat by @icebird1
