Hidden in a breathtaking Icelandic valley, Seljavallalaug is one of Iceland’s oldest swimming pools, built in 1923 🇮🇸 🏔️

🏊 It was originally built to teach local children and residents how to swim after swimming lessons became compulsory in Iceland

Planning a visit? Here’s what to expect 👇

🥾 A 15–20 minute scenic hike takes you to the pool, with stunning mountain views along the way.
🌡️ The naturally heated water is usually around 20–30°C (68–86°F), depending on the season—warm, but not as hot as Iceland’s famous hot springs.
🦠 Because the pool isn’t regularly cleaned, you’ll notice algae on the bottom and sides, making it quite slippery, so take extra care getting in and out. ⚠️
🚪 The changing room is very basic and not well maintained, so don’t expect luxury facilities.

🤍 It may not be perfect, but its rich history, dramatic surroundings, and peaceful atmosphere make it one of Iceland’s most unforgettable hidden gems.

If I had to show someone what Icelandic summer truly feels like… I think I would choose this view.

At first glance, it’s just a landscape.

But the longer you look, the more details begin to appear.

Your eyes first catch the endless field of purple lupines, gently moving with the wind. Then they wander toward a waterfall quietly flowing down the hillside, naturally guiding your gaze deeper into the scene. Beyond it, the calm waters of Hvalfjörður meet the bay, reflecting the ever-changing Icelandic sky.

Between the flowers lie dark volcanic rocks-the very foundation of this young island, shaped by countless eruptions over thousands of years.

Look again.

You’ll notice a small patch of forest, something surprisingly rare in Iceland. Higher still, tiny streaks of snow stubbornly cling to the mountain slopes, refusing to surrender completely to summer.

Every piece of this landscape tells a different story.

Fire that created the land.
Ice that still refuses to leave.
Water that patiently shapes the valleys.
Life that returns every summer, painting the ground in shades of purple and green.

Everything has its place.

Nothing competes for attention, yet every element matters.

This is why Iceland never feels repetitive.

The longer you look… the more you discover.

Did you know?
The stone enclosure Fossárrétt hin yngri, visible in this landscape, is a traditional Icelandic sheep corral (rétt). Every autumn, sheep that have spent the summer roaming freely through the mountains are gathered here before returning to their farms-a tradition that has survived for centuries.
